5/9/18 - Athletic, wiry bodied righty with a power arm. Lands on-line and works downhill with a controlled, low effort delivery. Loose arm, full path to a high three-quarters slot. From the windup he occasionally paused at balance point to disrupt the hitter’s timing, but it also helped him gather his weight before he went down the hill. From the stretch his tendency to rush affected his command as he struggled with runners on base. Stretch times varied from 1.35-1.43. On the day he walked four and hit one batter. Fastball ranged from 91-96 mph, touching 97 once on a second inning fastball. Worked at mostly 91-93 in the fifth inning before his departure after 92 pitches. The action varied on his two-seamer with the best ones showing hard, late armside sink, although this was the exception more than the norm on this day. The fastball was mostly straight in the zone and the Illinois hitters did not swing/miss at it very often. Also flashed an average slider at 80-84 mph, but most were fringe-to-below average as he yanked it at release. Most had an early break, spun more side-to-side and were easily identified. It was still a somewhat effective pitch as it kept the hitters guessing, it just wasn’t a swing/miss threat. Earlier in the year his slider was above average-to-plus according to industry sources, but it was not on this look. Mixed in an occasional changeup at 80 mph. It looked like his feature pitch during his pregame bullpen, but only threw it to left-handed hitters in the game. It has the potential to be a better than average pitch in the future due to the feel, arm speed, control and movement he displayed in the bullpen. For the season left-handed hitters are slashing .302/.397/.421 and righties .250/.333/.342; development of the changeup could help increase his effectiveness against lefties. Overall, I did not see his best outing. However, he showed athleticism, an online, low effort delivery with clean arm action and fastballs up to 97 with feel for two secondary offerings. A very good package of present stuff with projection. He will most likely be selected early on day two of the draft.

4/18/18 - 6’3/195, Junior. Strong, wiry build with visible signs of a frame that is able to handle more weight. Compact delivery, high knee lift, long fluid arm-swing with full extension on release. Throws from a power 3/4 slot, fastball is effortless, sat in the 92-94 range with some natural arm-side action. Mixed in a handful of 95 and 96 mph fastballs, even in the sixth inning. Slider was 78-83 with mostly side-to-side action, very few with depth. Change-up sat 82-83 with fastball hand-speed. Showed more confidence with the CH in the later innings, had some swing/miss. Line: 6 innings, 5 hits, 3 walks, 5 punch outs. Projects as a late inning reliever in pro ball. Could see the fastball in the 95-98 range with only one inning to lock down.
