4/02/17

Stocky, sturdy frame at 6-foot, 225-pounds. Three pitches for strikes and command of fastball that sat 83-85 mph with run. Repeats delivery, more in lower half to use, arm swing is clean in back and gets out front, at times will push baseball but comes out clean from hand for most part. Threw breaking ball at 75-76 mph, more of a slider with 11/5 action, changeup was 76-77  mph for strikes. Pitched with tempo and attacked zone with all three pitches, showed feel and pitchability, three pitch guy who uses all his stuff in game, lots of success in his high school career, the arm will gain speed and the body has room to become more flexible and athletic. Solid 2017 arm that will pitch, give innings and get outs this year and at the next level.

3/5/16
6-foot, 215-pounds with stocky frame. At the plate feet start even, quick, short stride, starts hands head-level and in front of him, rushes his load a bit, drops the hands, arm-bar’s on his swing, doesn’t use his lower-half, locks both legs at contact, doesn’t extend on his swing, cuts himself short on the follow through. Defensively stays on his toes, good first step, reaches a little for grounders but works through the ball well, throws 78 mph across the diamond. On the mound he’s very energetic, up-tempo, get up and throw kind of pitcher. Gets underneath the ball at times on his pitches, opens the front side very early, minimal use of the lower half, closes himself off on the stride, loses balance towards the first-base side, release point is from low ¾ slot, fastball topped out at 78 mph, but struggled with command. Lost some arm speed with curveball, sat in the 66-68 mph range. Kazen is a big-body player with room to add muscle.

2/15/15
6-foot, 215-pound stocky, compact build for the 2017 grad. Worked only out of stretch during bullpen session. Slight hip turn to start delivery, arm was clean and free with a drop and drive in his lower half. Worked out of a ¾ arm slot, slightly across his body with landing foot, would open up losing some leverage on front leg. Was able to fill the zone with all three pitches. Fastball was 73-75 mph with some arm side run. Changeup sat between 66-68 mph, tendency to slow arm. Curveball was 62-64 mph and lost arm speed as well. Keeping same tempo and rhythm with all three of his pitches will be a big key for Kazen and he continues to develop.
