Ceballos has answered a lot of questions with his performance in the batter’s box this spring. His plate discipline has improved (31 walks against 34 strikeouts in 228 plate appearances), allowing him to tap into his plus raw power on greater occasions. His strong pitch recognition skills give him an ability to lay off borderline pitches and he demonstrated his bat to ball skills in the MLB Draft League last summer by posting an 85% Z-contact% rate and a .432 OBP. Despite his well below average run times to first base, he has average range with a 70-grade arm at the hot corner. He has made large improvements on the defensive side of the ball since JUCO, as well as transforming into a leaner, more athletic body type. Once more physically resembling Maikel Franco, the 6-foot-3, 210 pound Ceballos easily passes the eye test and now physically reminds of Manny Machado. With his combination of present tools and production (.342/.439/.637, 15 home runs) Ceballos is a near-certain lock to be selected in the top three to four rounds this summer.
One of our top ranked JUCO prospects last season and the 14th round pick by the Angels last summer, Ceballos is no stranger to prospect lists. Standing 6-foot-3, 210 pounds he also easily passes the eye test. He reminds of a slightly taller Maikel Franco with a similar toolset starting with a bazooka right arm. He’s a solid defender at third base, although his range is also similar to Franco’s where his hands allow him to make all the plays in his box, but he won’t be a game changer with his range and his well below average run tool. There’s also a chance Ceballos could have success behind the plate as he’s suited up there in previous seasons. The right handed batter has big strength and plus raw power to all fields. However, unlike many sluggers, Ceballos shows discipline in the batter’s box with good pitch recognition and an ability to lay off borderline pitches. He demonstrated this bat to ball skill in the MLB Draft League last summer by posting an 85% Z-contact% rate and a .432 OBP He has also improved his ability to go the other way for damage this spring. With his combination of present tools and production (.372/.469/.667) Ceballos is a near-certain lock to be selected in the top five rounds this summer.
2022 MLB Draft League: Oregon signee; Good athlete, began catching this summer as he moved away from 3B and his athleticism showed out. + throwing arm that shows glimpses of being ++. AA raw power that translates in game. Demonstrated bat to ball skills in DL by posting an 85% Z-contact% rate.
Ceballos, a Puerto Rico Baseball Academy product who's committed to Oregon, enjoyed a monstrous freshman campaign at San Jac, slashing .345/.478/.598 with 27 extra-base hits, including nine bombs while accruing nearly equal totals in strikeouts (45) and walks (44) in 60 games. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder is a physical athlete with multiple impactful pro tools. He's an advanced defender at the hot corner with as strong an arm as one will find in the college ranks – an 80-grade cannon that generates darts up to 99 mph across the infield. Offensively, Ceballos exhibits an advanced approach and barrels up balls consistently, producing high-end exit velocities from the right side of the plate. Meanwhile, the fact that Ceballos already can apply his effortless plus raw power to all fields during games only underscores his upside as a middle-of-the-order force who could hit for both average and power at the next level.
