Cape Cod: McConnell has starred for Louisiana Tech over the last two seasons, hitting .347/.399/.503 a year ago and then really taking off as a junior this spring, finishing .336/.417/.535 with 24 doubles, nine homers and 76 RBIs. He was a mainstay all summer for Hyannis, playing 41 games and recording 144 at-bats, holding his own with a .264 average, five doubles, three homers and 22 RBIs. His lefthanded swing contains a funky hand load can cause him to be late, but when he stays in rhythm he showed us the ability to drive the ball with authority to the pull side, as he ripped a double off the right-center wall and laced an RBI single to right on a backdoor slider. An accomplished doubles hitter, McConnell has not yet hit for enough power to justify his higher strikeout rate, but if he can continue to refine his approach he could make a quality senior sign next year. He's a plus runner who defends well in center field.
Athletic, defined build at 6-foot-1, 200-pounds. Stayed through a breaking ball making hard contact on a lineout to first, walked in another at bat going deep in the count and laying off some pitches out of the zone. Relaxed and balanced, simple load, short stride, small hand cock back. Generates bat speed with ease, loose swing leverage, consistent line drives in BP with carry to both gaps in BP. Accurate arm lacking carry during I/O. Fluid actions in the outfield ranging to both gaps. Second leading batter for La Tech this season with a .341 average, 19 doubles, nine home runs and 71 RBI.
