7/10/22

2022 MLB Draft: Rather than overpowering hitters with a big fastball, the Cal Poly ace racks up swings and misses with his secondary stuff, starting with a plus changeup. He has tremendous confidence and command of the pitch, routinely doubling and tripling up on it. Sitting in the low-80s, it looks like a fastball out of his hand and gets excellent run and fade. His slider flashes above average with sharp, late break and his fastball is fringy, sitting 89-92 without much life, but he can sneak it by hitters since he uses it maybe 40 percent of the time. Listed at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, the plus changeup is his main weapon, but an additional better-than-average secondary offering and his ability to control the zone puts him in the conversation of one of the better, healthy college starters in the country.

3/25/22

With a potential 1-1 pick as his teammate and the decimation of the college pitching class, Drew Thorpe is getting his share of looks and his stuff warrants any ascension. The Cal Poly ace had a season best 15 strikeouts and three hits allowed in seven innings against UC San Diego last week, surrendering no runs and just two walks. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is now an impressive 66-6 in 42.1 innings this season. Rather than overpowering hitters with a big fastball, Thorpe racks up swings and misses with his secondary stuff, starting with a plus changeup. He has tremendous confidence and command of the pitch, routinely doubling and tripling up on it. Sitting in the low 80s, it looks like a fastball out of his hand and gets excellent run and fade. He used it often the first couple times through the order, and as hitters started to lay off of it, he went to the slider. Early on, it lacked bite and showed gradual break, but it continued to improve, flashing above average with sharp, late break. The fastball is fringy, sitting 89-92 without much life, but he can sneak it by hitters since he uses it maybe 40 percent of the time. Listed at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, he does look like he could carry some additional mass. The delivery is simple and in line and he has a short arm action that lends some deception. The plus changeup has been there for Thorpe, but an additional better-than-average secondary offering and his ability to control the zone puts him in the conversation of one of the better, healthy college starters in the country. USA CNT- Six-foot-4 Drew Thorpe (Cal Poly) showed a quick, compact arm action and a drop-n-drive delivery. His 90-91 mph fastball had fair life and command as he was hit around, allowing six hits and three runs in two innings of work. His best pitch was an above average 83-84 mph changeup which had some tail and sink. He sold it well with conviction and fastball arm speed. Cape Cod- Struck out 104 in 90.1 innings as a 2YR FR this spring, then shined in two starts for Y-D, striking out 10 and posting a 0.90 ERA in two innings. A 6-foot-4, 200-pounder with a conventional high three-quarters delivery, Thorpe attacks the zone at 93-94 mph and sets it up with an outstanding swing-and-miss changeup. His breaking ball is his third pitch at this stage.

11/10/19

Thorpe showed a very long and projectable build standing at 6-4, 195 with a loose arm and feel for secondary pitches. The 2 inning outing had some ups and downs with the FB being hit, but also working out of jams and getting timely swings and misses (3Ks). Delivery allows the long, loose arm to load behind the back before flowing to its H-3/4 release moving through a tucking high front knee and being able to create angle down the hill. FB 86-89 T91 with short run on both sides of the plate; found too much of the middle leading to two doubles and a single projecting to jump in velocity as strength increases. CHG 78-81 late bottom flashing dive; used it often. Showed the pitch too much on a leadoff HR but ability to trust the pitch afterwards showed chance for growth. CB 76-77 firm overhand break having a couple with slurvy endings; chance for the pitch to tick up as it kept good armspeed. The feel for both the CHG and CB is evident and as he develops more consistent command of the FB could see his profile improve.
