VA/DC Scout Blog

6-foot-1, 186-pound frame with a strong lower half. Square athletic stance, small lift and replaces, and hands load and separate in rhythm. Alvis does a nice job involving the lower half early and finishes it through contact. In the seventh inning he got a 87 mph fastball up in the zone and got on plane barreling it up to left field for a RBI double. Have always liked the offense that Alvis can provide from the left side. Another strong uncommitted bat in the 2022 class.

VA/DC State Games

Alvis is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and some projection left to it. He hits from the left side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, two tap stride on line, short load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely with and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, goes straight to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing, strong at contact with extension through the ball, showed a primarily pull approach with the ability to use the whole field, some power present to his pull side, exit velocity was 92. In the infield, gets behind the ball and fields with average hands, works through ball to a clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot, position velocity was 72. Ran a 7.35 60 yard dash. On the mound, he throws from a three-quarters arm slot, long break tightens up to a short free arm action and some effort to his delivery. Shoulders are uphill and closed, lands slightly open with a fall off finish and some recoil. Fastball was 74-77, with downward plane and a bit of sink to it. Curveball had good armspeed and was 63-64 with sharp 1/7 break to it.

Preseason All-State II

6-foot, 175-pound frame with athleticism and projection left to it.. At the plate Alvis starts open and slightly upright before using a small leg lift to stride landing on line. Foot gets down on time and displayed solid rhythm and balance throughout. Hands have rhythm and flow in the load before firing into the zone with a slightly uphill path and a whippy barrel through the zone. Carry in the gaps with some power potential. Exit velocity was 82 mph. At first base Alvis had active feet that worked well around the bag and average hands. Short arm action from a low three-quarter arm slot with 77 mph positional velocity. Home to 1st time was 4.20. On the mound Alvis starts with a small side step rocker, average balance point, and moves with rhythm down the mound. Short quick arm action from a three-quarter arm slot. Solid three pitch mix with feel for all three. Fastball had arm side run to both sides and sat 80-81 mph touching 82 mph. The breaking ball had a tight 2/8 action at 66-68 mph. The changeup was 70 mph with some arm side fade and played well out of the hand.
