Solid frame at 6-foot-2. Works with an extremely quick pace on the mound and shows some swagger while doing it. Uses a step back as hands move over head and show rhythm in the break. High balance point before a bit of a drop and drive down the mound with shoulders elevated. Short arm circle and throws from a three-quarter arm slot. Fastball sat between 73-76 mph and topped at 77 a few times. Curveball started the day at 58-59 and lacked arm speed and feel early. The breaking ball picked up at 62-63 mph in the middle innings and displayed a much better feel for it and a 1/7 shape. Biggest takeaway from Johnson on the day is that he is a big time competitor and an even better teammate.

Top Prospect Games II

Johnson is 6-1 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the left side from an open athletic stance, heel lift stride, loads back to a bar, hips rotate violently, good balance to swing. Very quick to ball with batspeed and extension through it, level to slightly uphill swing path, used whole field, strength at contact and power potential, exit velocity was 91. At first base, gets body behind ball and fields with average hands and a wider base, high three quarters arm slot, position velocity was 80. On the mound, he throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a shorter free arm action with some effort. Shoulders uphill and on line, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 70-73, with downward plane and some late run. Curveball was 55-61 with good armspeed and 1/7 break. Change-up was 63-65 with good armspeed and fade.

Johnson has an athletic frame that still has projection left to it. He hits from the left side and showed some strength at contact and some batspeed. Chance to have easy doubles power with potential for pull home run power. Used whole field all weekend. On the mound, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery and normal effort. Fastball was 75-78, touching 79 with some late run to it. Change-up was 70-71 and he slowed his arm to throw the pitch. Slowed his arm on his curveball too, pitch ran 59-61 with big 1/7 break.

12.3.16:  Johnson is 6-0 with a lankier frame, smooth drop and drive delivery, throwing from a three-quarters arm slot. Longer, loose arm action, normal effort. Shoulders uphill and on line, square landing with athletic finish. Fastball was 70-73 with some armside run. Change-up had decent armspeed and fading action, sitting 63-65. Curveball had 1/7 break and was 58-62. Hits from the left side from an athletic stance. Toe tap stride, load back with wrap. Very good hips and balance throughout swing. Longer path with a quick bat and extension. Good approach working the middle of the field, exit velocity was 81. At first base, average footwork and soft hands, throws from a three-quarters slot with a position velocity of 73.
