2/23/19: Wilson stands out right away for his confident actions and advanced defensive profile behind the plate. Over the course of a recent series against Dallas Baptist, the backstop managed a talented and erratic Gophers staff with lots of velocity and significant struggles finding the zone. Nevertheless, Wilson worked soft and firm behind the dish, showing soft hands and an ability to stick pitches at the fringes of the zone, while also demonstrating good side-to-side actions in the dirt. Wilson's catch-and-throw game is solid, as well, with the junior quick out of his crouch and through his transfer, delivering pop times in the 1.95-to-2.01 range on the weekend. Offensively, Wilson can get a little stiff on the front side and often exits his load with a near full arm bar, leading to some lag in his barrel delivery and an inconsistent path. When he squares a ball up, however, there's some extra base juice in the stick, and he regularly puts together solid at bats demonstrating a plan at the plate and good feel for the zone. The production may look a little light for a future everyday role at the Major League level, but Wilson has enough foundational value on the defensive side to keep the offensive bar for him relatively low. Further, we should see more power manifest over the course of the spring and through the balance of his pro development, giving him a shot at blossoming into a sneaky good down-order producer with a low average but some ability to contribute in the power and on-base departments. He fits well as a dev play in the 6th to 8th round range and could bump his stock some if he can get to that pop more consistently this Spring. (Faleris)
