Uncommitted Breakdown: The 2022 Crew

PBR Alberta has started off strong hosting events in Lethbridge, Calgary, and the Edmonton area. Players showed up in droves to showcase their talents to scouts in hopes of turning some heads in the process.

Though there are many 2021 grads still available, many of them are being scooped up as they get their name out there. The 2022 class however, has many names that schools will want to keep an eye on as the calendar gets closer and closer to the close of 2020.

The Twenty-Two Crew is 10 standout players in the province that will be graduating in 2022 and is based on those who attended any of the 3 events held by PBR Alberta this fall. Today we bring you five of those players who as college coaches, you need to be aware of and on your follow list.

Gavin Galenza C / RHP / St Joseph, AB / 2022

Report: One of the stronger arms out of this class and any class for that matter, touching 86mph with the fastball, Gavin showed great command of all three pitches. His curveball had a late tail on it, mixed with the variance of speed and slight cut on the change up, he is a very effective pitcher. He also catches and boasts a 1.97 pop time. Gavin was clocked throwing 77mph from being the plate, his quick release and low position throughout his throw gave him consistent accuracy. Gavin is no doubt one of the top players in this class. As he continues to develop, he is only going to improve in his tools making him a definite get for any program.

Luke Wilson OF / C / Sir Winston Churchill, AB / 2022

Report: Wilson came out to the first open ID and caught some attention as soon as he stepped into the box. The powerful left-hander had the ball jump off his bat. He catches the ball out front with quick hands, and with an exit velo of 92 he has power to all parts of the field. Luke has some upside defensively with a strong accurate arm, and deceptive speed but there is no doubt that his most intriguing attribute is his strength, and being a 22 with lots of time to grow, he is only going to get stronger.

Jack Wheatley SS / RHP / St Francis, AB / 2022

Report: A very intriguing prospect. It is tough to know if you take him as a shortstop or a pitcher. Jack has a wide range with the fastball sitting anywhere from 81-85. His off-speed has some great movement and he consistently found all three pitches in the zone. On the infield he has some good hands, and a quick release. What is very impressive and makes you wonder where he should play, is the pop in his bat. His high end exit velo definitely helps with his lightning quick hands and consistent barrel on the ball. Jack has the tools to play either position, what will be interesting to watch during his development is if he has the chops to be a two-way player at the college level or not.

Mathieu Morin OF / C / Bellerose Composite, AB / 2022

Report: A jack of all trades. Mathieu showcased at every position except for infield. He first garnered some attention from the outfield with good footwork and strong arm. Coming out of his hand at 83 mph combined with his 7.01 sixty time he definitely has some defensive prowess. Offensively he has some great power, short compact swing, and gets his hands through the zone quickly. His pop time was quite impressive. The top time he posted was 2.04 and has some decent velocity coming out of the crouch. Though he posted some decent numbers on the mound in Edmonton, his strongest attributes really come through in the outfield or behind the plate. Mathieu is an exciting prospect. His numbers already stand out but as he develops and gets stronger you are going to see them start to climb.

David Stewart LHP / OF / Vauxhall Academy of Baseball, AB / 2022

Report: We really liked the way Stewart worked out from both the outfield and on the mound at our Summer Open ID. He then pounded the strike zone at Vauxhall's Scout day and the southpaw works with clean, repeatable delivery and three pitches that he can control. He's an athlete with a 6.80 run time and does the little things right in game while having a contact oriented approach at the plate from the right side. With some physical maturing still to come, the actions make you really take notice and Stewart is somebody we feel is going to have a really good winter and make strides heading into 2021.
