Tuesday, April 2

The anticipated pitcher duel lived up to the billing as the Huskies won 3-0.

Hewitt Trussville (#7, 7A) opened up area play Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over Vestavia Hills (#9, 7A). The story of the night was the Huskies starter, 2020 LSU commit Michael Fowler, who is the #8 player in our AL class of 2020 rankings. Fowler was far from perfect on the night, allowing 5BB, but his stuff was absolutely dominant. He racked up 13K’s in 7 innings of work and surrendered just 1 hit, which didn’t come until the 6th inning of his complete game shutout. His FB command was iffy at times, but the slider was a real weapon. He leaned on it heavily throughout the night, throwing it in all counts and using it as a put away pitch.

Vestavia also got a complete game effort from its starter, 2019 Jacksonville St. signee Colton Lewis, the #21 player in our AL rankings. Lewis struck out 10 in 6 innings of work and allowed 3R (2ER) on 5BB and 3H. Like Fowler, he wasn’t particularly sharp early on, but settled in nicely the last few innings.

The Huskies struck first in the bottom of the 3rd, when 2020 OF Keith Lanum led off the inning by dropping a single into LF. A botched pick-off attempt moved him all the way to 3rd and he would come in to score on a passed ball on the next pitch.

Hewitt Trussville would add to its lead in the bottom of the 4th, as 2019 OF Zach Defnall singled and eventually came around to score on an RBI single by 2021 IF Landen Berguson. 2019 IF Creed Parker would also score in the inning on a  1st and 3rd play by the Huskies.

The Rebels threatened in the top of the 6th, as 2020 OF Mason Maners led off the inning with a single up the middle and Lewis smoked a ball at the 2nd baseman for an E4. They would be stranded however, as Fowler responded with a K and weak ground ball to get out of the inning.

The two teams will meet again Thursday at Vestavia Hills with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 PM.
