PBR Alabama Staff

Hoover sweeps DH from Auburn

In game 1 of the doubleheader, Hoover took advantage of costly Auburn mistakes, plating 4 in the first inning on their way to a 9-3 victory. 2021 RHP Austin Cornelius (#59) got the win for the Bucs, throwing 4 innings with 3 strikeouts, while surrendering 3 hits and 3 runs (2ER). 2020 RHP Avery Anderson threw the final 3 innings, striking out 4 and giving up no runs, while picking up the save in the process. The righty often pitched backwards to the Tigers, utilizing a big 12/6 curveball to keep them off balance.

Auburn showed some life in the top of the 2nd when Cameron Chavis came around to score on an error after getting hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Two more Tigers would score later in the inning when 2021 C Riley Austin drove a single up the middle with 2 outs.

Hoover pulled away with 2 runs in both the 4th and 5th innings, highlighted by RBIs from 2020 SS Lawrence Hammonds (#81, Snead St. signee), 2020 C Davis Young and 2021 Ty Truett.

Game 2 was much of the same for the Bucs, as they came out hot with 3 runs in the bottom of the first. 2020 IF Cooper Prince led off the inning with a single, moved to 3rd on a failed pickoff attempt, and scored on a sac fly from 2020 OF Robby Ashford (#4, Oregon signee). Davis Young and Colson Lawrence followed that up with back to back knocks into the LCF gap, with each eventually coming around to score.

Lawrence got the start on the mound for Hoover and delivered a gem. He threw a complete game (5 innings), allowing just 2 hits and 1 run and did not walk a batter.

Auburn scored its lone run of the game in the top of the 5th, after 2020 3B Jay Thomason (#49, Air Force signee) led off the inning with a double off the LF wall and came around to score on a groundout from 2020 OF Caden Parker (#98, UAH signee). One bright spot for Auburn was 2021 LHP Jack Tullier, who struck out 2 batters in a scoreless inning of work.

Hoover was aggressive on the base paths, swiping 7 bags in the second game alone. They blew the game open in the bottom of the 5th with a 6-run inning, punctuated by a 3RBI triple from Ashford and a walk-off single from Young, ending the game 11-1 in favor of the Bucs.
