TEAM STRENGTHS:

Inexperience abounds but the team is scrappy and will play hard.

OUTLOOK:

The Spartans lost a lot of production from the 2019 team as only two positional starters and two pitchers return in 2020. Although inexperience will abound, there are plenty of talented players on this year’s roster for Coach Brett Boutwell. Senior Treyce Byrd is a solidly built (6’1 205 lbs.) RHP/OF that will be counted on this year as a two way guy. Byrd shows a live arm on the mound and a nice offensive approach from the left side. Another ‘20 grad, Ben Riley Flowers, is a LHP that shows solid feel for all three pitches. The fastball shows big time arm side action. Both Byrd and Flowers have offers headed into their senior season. Yet another senior arm, RHP Jacob Wright (6’2 215 lbs.), has signed with the University of Mobile and will also see time in the outfield for the Spartans. Two juniors to keep an eye on in 2020 are SS/RHP Cade Easterbrook and 2B/SS Coby Holmes. Easterbrook has some nice pop from the left side at the plate and can defend at a high level at SS. He will also log some innings on the mound for the Spartans. Holmes may be a bit undersized but his ability shows different. The defensive actions in the middle of the field on the dirt are solid and he should be a “table setter” for the Spartan lineup. One newcomer to keep an eye on this year is ‘22 utility player CT Englebert. Look for the sophomore to log time at positions all over the field this year. Although the Spartans graduated a lot from the 2019 season, there is still a number of talented players on hand to help the team get back to the 6A state playoffs.
