Alabama High School Team Preview: Dothan Wolves

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2021 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. That excitement may be at an all-time high entering this high school season as the 2020 high school baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season during an offseason unlike any other and as always, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Outlook:

The Dothan Wolves enter 2021 with a bevvy of front line type arms and some power bats throughout the lineup. Expectations are high and several returness are part of the reason for that optimism. At the top of the pitching staff is senior RHP and Auburn signee Chase Allsup. The 6'2 220 pounder does a great job of attacking hitters with a low 90's fastball and a sharp breaking ball. At times, Allsup can touch the mid 90's and will also play the outfield when not pitching. Another front line type arm is Troy signee Dawson Hamilton. The senior RHP features a "heavy" fastball in the upper 80's and can command all of his pitches well.  One of those power bats in the lineup will be 3B Matthew Omohundro. The Central Alabama CC signee shows a ton of pull side power and is an extremely athletic corner defender. Omohundro is a threat to leave the yard anytime he steps in the box. Jayce Dyer is a senior 1B that has signed with Southern Union CC. Dyer has power to all fields and shows a comfortable feel at 1B. The shortstop position is in good shape as senior Te'Relle George-Mills returns in 2021. The Lawson State CC signee is an athletic middle infielder with soft and quick hands. He has plus power to the opposite field and has been cleared from Tommy John surgery and has been up to 89 mph off the mound in recent weeks. Several other seniors will play a key role in 2021. RHP JP Reed (6'3 200 lbs.) creates nice downhill tilt on the fastball that he locates very well in the mid 80's. Bauer Sharp returns in the outfield and is a very good runner who also shows a ton of power to the opposite field. Senior catcher Carter Fanning returns and will be tasked with handling the impressive pitching staff. He shows nice arm strength from behind the plate as well as being a quiet receiver of pitches. A young player to keep an eye on is sophomore 2B/SS Blake Wynn. He is a very aggressive defender with big potential for gap to gap power in 2021 and in the years to come.

The Wolves have all of the ingredients to be major players in the 7A classification in 2021.
