PBR AL Athletes of the Month: February

PBR Alabama Staff

It seems as though the month of February moved by rather swiftly once baseball season began on February 11th. We are two and a half weeks into the season and have already seen some very impressive performances from across the state. Eight players have been chosen as PBR Alabama Athletes of the Month for the month of February. Each of these winners will receive a t-shirt depicting their "Athlete of the Month" status. We appreciate all of the high school coaches for nominating their players, as our staff had some very difficult decisions to make for February. Each month during the season, we will continue to highlight some of the top performers from across the state. Let's take a look at the eight award winners from February.

Special thanks to Structure Brand for sponsoring the PBR Alabama Players of the Month and supplying t-shirts to the winners. Visit their website for all of your team uniform and fan apparel needs.

PBR ALABAMA athletes OF THE Month

+ Slate Alford (2021, 3B, Bob Jones) To say that Alford has gotten off to a torrid start to the 2021 season is an understatement. The Mississippi State signee has been a two-time PBR Alabama Player of the Week for good reason. Alford is hitting at a .483 clip (14-29) with two doubles and four home runs. A participant at this year's Super 60, Alford has also driven in 14 runs while also scoring 13 times. He has also gotten on base by drawing four walks and being hit-by-pitch an additional three times.

+ Garrett Borst (2021, RHP, James Clemens) The Jets figure to be right in the middle of a very competitive 7A Area 8 race this season and expect Borst to be a major contributor on the mound. So far, so good for the senior right-hander. In the first month of the season, Borst has gotten off to a 2-0 start and only allowed four hits over 11 innings. He has only allowed one run (earned) and struck out 15 hitters and only walked two. He has a miniscule 0.63 ERA.

+ Jack Freeman (2021, RHP, Helena) Senior uncommitted RHP Jack Freeman enjoyed a successful start to the 2021 season for the Huskies in February. He tossed 18 innings and finished with a 3-0 record for the month. He only allowed two earned runs and only issued one walk for the month, while striking out 19 hitters. He currently has a 0.78 ERA.

+ Davis Gillespie (2022, 3B, Oak Mountain) The Future Game participant from this past summer has been a major offensive weapon for the Eagles in the opening month of the season. A Southern Miss recruit, Gillespie is hitting .483 (14-29) with 11 RBIs and six doubles. He's also showed off the power with three triples and one home run to start the season.

+ Devin Howell (2023, OF/RHP, Ohatchee) The lone sophomore on the list, Howell has been on fire to start the 2021 season. In the first two and a half weeks of the season, he has hit at a .545 clip (12-22). This includes two doubles and a triple to go along with six RBIs and four walks. Howell has also stolen five bases and scored 10 runs to go along with a .615 OBP.

+ Jacob Little (2021, SS/RHP, Southside) Little is another that had a phenomenal February on the mound and at the plate. During the month, he logged a .429 (9-21) batting average and had a .591 OBP. He showed off the power a bit with four doubles and one home run to go along with five RBIs. The Southern Union CC signee was also dominant on the mound over his 12 innings pitched. He was 1-0 with 17 K's and only four BBs. Opponents hit just .197 against him, and he only allowed two earned runs, which equates to a 1.16 ERA.

+ Dalton McElroy (2021, SS/RHP, Pleasant Valley) The senior was impressive with the bat and on the mound during the month. Offensively, McElroy was 14-26 (.538 BA) with an OBP of .613, which included five doubles, seven RBIs and he also stole three bases. On the mound, the senior threw 11 2/3 innings and tallied 15 Ks and had an ERA slightly above 2.00.

+ Walker Stallworth (2021, RHP/1B, Pike Liberal Arts) The Southern Union CC signee has been a big key to the Patriots impressive start in 2021. The senior has logged 11 innings and only allowed two hits on the season so far. Opposing hitters are only hitting .056 against him, as he has racked up 20 K's so far. He has not allowed a run on the year (0.00 ERA) and just finished off a no-hitter this past Saturday.
