June 25 Top Underclass Games Scouting Analysis: Pitchers

Five guys showed up as a "pitcher only" for the Underclass Games at UAB and each had some success on the mound in their two innings of work. In the next few days we will look at the catcher, outfield and infield positions but today let's take a look at the guys on the bump.

Nick Hamlin (2021, RHP/OF, Oxford) Showed solid feel with all three pitches and was a ground ball machine on the mound during his two innings of work on the mound. Had a clean delivery from a mid ¾ slot and created a ton of ASR on his 2 seam FB. The FB sat mid 80’s and bumped 86 mph a few times and really stayed in the bottom half of the zone with this pitch. The breaking ball showed nice shape in the mid 70’s and the change up was mainly upper 70’s with tumble. A ton of potential in this ‘21 RHP.

Austin Cornelius (2021, RHP/OF, Hoover) Whippy ¾ slot that showed a very quick arm and legit ASR into RH hitters. Showed solid feel with a nice 3 pitch mix. The slider showed really nice spin and the changeup really tumbled into RH hitters. This is a high upside ‘21 RHP. The FB was up to 83 mph with action and the power slider was 73 mph. The change up sat 74-76 mph in both innings. RHP that has really made significant strides since last year.

Matthew Rhodes (2021, RHP/3B, Auburn) FB sat upper 70’s to low 80’s from a very clean delivery. The actions on the mound are solid to match a nice frame. Because, he does a nice job of creating leverage on his pitches. The aforementioned FB showed nice ASR. Really impressed with his command of his secondary pitches. The breaking ball has nice late depth and tight spin with good tilt. Physical ‘21 RHP.

Jacob Ingram (2021, RHP/OF, Tallassee) Really clean arm and does a nice job of working downhill with some ASR. The delivery is solid and does a nice job repeating his mechanics. The breaking ball showed true 12/6 action and really nice down hill tilt. The FB was up to 79 mph (sat upper 70’s in both innings) while the well shaped breaking ball was mid 60’s and he mixed in a nice change at 69 mph that showed tumble into RH hitters.

Nathan Wilson (2022, LHP/1B, Westminster Christian) The ‘22 grad showed a high ¾ slot with some ASR on the FB with a smooth delivery and very clean arm action. The breaking ball shows depth and showed the ability to get in on RH hitters. Commanded both pitches and really located arm slide. The FB was low 70’s and the breaking was mid 60’s. Don’t get too caught up in the velocity with this young arm. The potential is there.
