PBR Future Games: Games 1 and 2 Recap

Austin Sharp
Director of Scouting

The PBR Future Games is officially in full swing at LakePoint with some of the top uncommitted prospects the country has to offer are representing their respective states. Team Alabama opened up yesterday with the pro-style workout that included batting practice, defensive workouts, and the 60 yard dash. Stats for each positional player can be found HERE. Games got started today and there were some very impressive performances from position players and pitchers.

Although a large majority of college coaches are unable to physically be in attendance due to recruiting dead period rules, you can guarantee they are locked in from all over the country on the Playsight livestream.

Check out the game recaps and top performers from each game today below..

Game 1

+ Opening up the Future Games with PBR Texas, Alabama was faced with some elite pitching prospects out of the gate. These Texas arms did an excellent job limiting the Alabama offense to one run in 7 innings. Jumping right into it, '23 MIF/OF RJ Hamilton (Hoover) had himself a stellar day at the plate in both games. In this game, Hamilton scored the lone run for Alabama as he roped a 1-out triple to the backside gap. Hamilton stumbled out of the box but showcased his speed around the bases and was still fast enough to make it to third base with ease. Quick hands with some juice.

+ Another '23 graduate that impressed was RHP Chase Ambrose (Buckhorn), who tossed three innings in relief against Texas. Ambrose came out of the gate working 84-86 mph with some sink to the arm side throughout each inning. He was more 84-85 mph in his final inning on the mound, but he pounded the fastball in the zone consistently. Flashed a hard, late-breaking slider that ranged from 77-78 mph. Showed some swing & miss potential as it worked well of the fastball. Got hit around later in his stint, but the stuff and the fact he is a 2023 is still very impressive.

+ Here's another 2023 that has really made some noise so far at the Future Games. '23 OF Coleman Mizell (Hartselle) stands a physical 6-foot-3, 205 pounds in the box from the left side. Put on a show during his BP round on Saturday's workout and seemed to translate well to gameplay. Singles through the right side below in Game 1 that came off the barrel pretty hot. Posted a 95 mph exit velo and ran a 6.83 60 yard dash.

Batting Practice

Game 2

+ The bats started to come alive during Game 2 vs. PBR Mississippi as the Alabama offense put up nine runs en route to a 9-6 win. Starting on the bump this game was the 6-foot-4, 180 pound '22 LHP Alton Davis II (Bessemer Academy) that was probably one of the more anticipated starts of the Future Games. Since June 25th, 2019, Davis II was 74-76, 77 mph at the Underclass Games. Fast-forward to June 30th this summer, Davis II bursted onto the scene working 88-89, 91 mph. It is safe to say Davis II has caught the eyes of many college coaches since then, so you can guarantee there were a plethora of college coaches locked into this start and he did not disappoint. Through three innings of work on the mound, he came out working 87-90 in the 1st inning, but came out in the 2nd inning and the first couple fastballs registered at 92 mph. Featured a slower breaking ball at 68-69 mph that he tried to backdoor to RHH's and a slider that is more firmer at 71-73 mph. Going to be fun to watch where this southpaw ends up in the future.

+ A hitter that put together another impressive performance was '23 MIF RJ Hamilton (Hoover). If his performance in Game 1 didn't catch your eye, his stat line he put together was nothing short of eye-opening. In his 1st AB of Game 2, Hamilton walked up to the dish with the bases juiced and promptly cleared with yet another triple down the RF line. Showed some maturity laying off some tough pitches to get himself into a 3-1 count and hopped on a fastball. Singled up the middle in his last two AB's of Game 2 to finish 3-3 with five RBI's.

+ '22 3B McGwire Turner (Helena) had probably the loudest swing of the day for Team Alabama. Put on a show during BP with some pull side juice and translated to gameplay as he unloaded on a fastball and drove it over the CF's head that one-hopped the wall. Turner does not get cheated at the dish and has really seen some power come on as of late.

+ A returner from last year's PBR Future Games, '22 MIF William Burgreen (Decatur) put together some impressive swings during Game 2. Put the speed on display as he tripled to the backside gap in his 1st AB of Game 2. Ran a 6.82 60 YD at the workout. Came up in the 7th inning and did a nice job staying on a fastball and shooting over the third baseman for a single.
