Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Priceville Bulldogs enioyed a stellar 2023 campaign, posting an impressive 29-7 record and were ranked inside the top-10 in Class 4A for the entirety of the season. Reaching the Elite 8 last season, the Bulldogs return some key pieces and will be motivated to make another deep playoff push in 2024.

The Bulldogs really seemed to hit their stride late in the regular season, as they swept through the area series with relative ease and carried an impressive 14 game winning streak into the playoffs. After winning both opening round series against North Jackson and Cordova, the Bulldogs matched up with St. John Paul II in the Elite 8, but were unfortunately eliminated in a tightly-contested three game series to end their season with a 29-7 record. Shifting the focus to 2024, the Bulldogs lost a good chunk of production from last year's graduating seniors, but there's still plenty of talent to go around on this year's roster. C Wes Walker (North Alabama, 2024) is a multi-year starter at the catching position and was named to 1st Team of the Class 4A All-State last year as a junior. The switch-hitting backstop hit .388 last season with 11 2B's, 10 HR's, and 49 RBI's in the heart of the order, and is looking for the same type of production this spring. On the mound, RHP Colman Gann (2025) is a big time arm returning for the Bulldogs, as he went 5-0 last season with a 3.69 ERA and collected 47 K's over 30.1 IP. He's a mid-80's right-hander and a quality uncommitted junior in AL. RHP Tyde Borden (2025) is another returning junior pitcher who also will get into the mid-80's with his fastball. Last season, the junior went 3-1 and compiled a 3.28 ERA with 32 K's in 32 IP. INF Jake England (Lawson State CC, 2024) has good pop from the right side of the plate and is expected hit in the heart of their order, while INF Jaidan Gordon (2024) is another senior that is expected to drive in some runs for the Bulldogs this spring. Looking at the junior class, OF Jacob Ferguson (2025) and INF/RHP Tatum Sivley (2025) are a pair of uncommitted prospects who should step into large roles this spring. Ferguson is slated to hit near the top of the order, while Sivley should see some significant time on the mound this spring. The Bulldogs should also rely on some younger players this spring, as OF/RHP Bronson Carroll (2026) and RHP Casen Dutton (2026) are sophomores who will have opportunities to contribute heavily to this year's team. INF/RHP Aidan Gates (2027), INF/RHP David Sharp (2027), and INF Trevor Shannon (2027) are also a trio of freshman who are all talented and hoping to make an impact at the varsity level this spring.

After a stellar 2023 season that ended deep in the playoffs, the Bulldogs will be hoping they can replicate that success this spring with some key returners back on both sides of the ball. They'll compete in Area 12 against East Lawrence, Haleyville, and West Morgan for a berth in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. Expect Priceville to once again make the playoffs this spring and be a strong contender in Class 4A in 2024.
