College Crosscheck: Week Three Pitchers

David Seifert
Director of College Scouting

This week College Crosscheck took me to Minneapolis for the Cambria College Classic, which featured Duke, North Carolina and North Carolina State from the ACC against Big Ten opponents Iowa, Purdue and the host Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Friday’s action was highlighted by the electric pitching performance of Max Meyer (Minnesota) who unleashed a 112-pitch complete game with 14 strikeouts against the Tar Heels. Saturday featured NC State lefty Nick Swiney sitting down 22 Boilermakers in a row. And Sunday saw the Wolfpack win the Classic with a perfect 3-0 record with their late night Sunday 11-7 W over the Gophers.

Iowa led the Big Ten with a 2-1 record that included wins over Duke and North Carolina.

Meyer was selected tournament MVP while Zack Raabe (Minnesota) led the Classic with a .583 batting average (7-for-12).

He has a super quick arm that generated fastballs up to 94 mph, accompanied by plenty of action at the plate. His average fastball release point of 5.62’ is not optimal, but he does deliver it with good downward plane creating an above average vertical break of 18.6”.
