GBG Arizona Scout Day: Outfield Analysis

Jordon Banfield
Arizona Scouting Director

The GBG Arizona PBR Scout Day took place on Sunday, January 7th at Liberty HS in Peoria. The event featured prospects from the 2019-2022 classes and gave all players in the organization an opportunity to be evaluated by PBR and considered for future invite-only events. Today, we start our positional analysis with the outfielders. Complete video, data, pictures and scouting reports have been posted to players' individual profiles. As always contact [email protected] or direct message @PBRArizona on Twitter with any questions and/or information.

2022 Trevor Adams takes home the top spot on the list after emerging as a very impressive two-way 2022 prospect at the event. Already a solid athlete, Adams shows advanced feel both on the mound and in the batter's box while comfortably roaming the outfield. John Lauinger also stood out for his athleticism and projectable body, earning himself an invite to the Preseason All-State Games where he continued to perform at a high level.

Top Outfield Prospects

Trevor Adams OF / 1B / Red Mountain, AZ / 2022

5-foot-10, 145-pound frame. Shows impressive combination of polish and athleticism for a current eighth grader. With extremely advanced rhythm in the box, Adams consistently made hard line drive contact to all fields in his round of BP. Using a leg-lift trigger, short hand load and explosive lower half, Adams is one to watch offensively. An athletic mover in the outfield, he posted an 81 mph outfield velocity to go along with his 7.2 60-yard dash. To cap things off Adams ran his fastball up to 77 mph and showed feel for three pitches with one of the more advanced deliveries we saw on the day. 65-67 mph curveball was consistently around the zone with early 11-5 break and 66-68 mph changeup will continue to improve as he throws it with fastball arm speed.

John Lauinger OF / SS / Pinnacle, AZ / 2021

A complete unknown coming in to the event, but immediately put himself on the radar with a 6.94 60-yard dash. Everything he does is fast twitch and despite some crudeness in his swing, Lauinger made lots of hard contact to the pull side in BP. Power will increase with strength gains; 79 mph exit velocity. Also worked out on the infield, but his future is in the outfield where he threw 77 mph and moves well. Multi-sport athlete has a chance to improve rapidly due to athleticism.

Andrew Biddle OF / 2B / Liberty, AZ / 2021

5-foot-9, 120-pound frame. Athletic mover in the outfield, getting good bat reads and working through the ball to make accurate throws with solid carry. Top OF arm at the event with 82 mph velocity. Turned in solid 7.16 60-yard dash for young 2021 prospect. Offensively uses leg lift trigger, dropping his hands to load with almost no negative move and creating very little separation. Strides closed and shows uphill bat path; 69 mph exit velocity. Also worked out in the infield, posting 79 mph velo, but hands and actions profile better in the outfield.

Ben Carlo OF / LHP / Pinnacle, AZ / 2021

6-foot, 155-pound frame with some broadness in shoulders and strength in lower half. Turned in 7.38 60-yard dash and will run better as his mechanics clean up. LHH uses very short stride to land slightly closed. Will drive ball more consistently as he gets through the baseball more with his lower half and creates better extension; 81 mph exit velocity. Feet work through the ball well in the outfield, registering 74 mph outfield velocity with short arm action from high ¾ arm slot.

Daniel Rodriguez OF / RHP / Marcos De Niza, AZ / 2021

5-foot-8, 150-pound frame. Skilled young player. Took some of the better BP at the event with a simple swing, using a very short stride and flat bath to square up the baseball. 75 mph exit velocity. Solid outfield actions; made accurate throws with clean arm action at 77 mph. Also pitched, sitting 77-79 mph with his fastball, topping at 80 with the same clean arm action he showed in outfield drills. Developing curveball tended to pop up out of his hand at 57-59. Also threw 62-64 mph changeup that flashed some late tumble.
