Progress Report: Matthew Fike

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

PBR has had the chance to dig through the players and numbers from the past year, we have had a chance to see some players make some significant jumps recently. Today, we will be taking a look at a "Progress Report" feature that highlights players that have shown significant improvement in their game; whether it's on the mechanical end, performance wise, physicality or in the measurable statistic department. The "Progress Report" can be a minor improvement in recent months or a substantial transformation over time. Today, we will be taking a look at '21 LHP Matthew Fike (Casteel).

2021 LHP Matthew Fike (Casteel) uncommitted, last attended a PBR event at our AZ Summer Open in May of 2019. He stood out at the open event, running his FB up to 84mph while sitting 80-83mph with shorter arm action. He showed some feel for his off-speed pitches.

We recently had a chance to see Fike working out on the hill with X2. He's gained an inch and added some strength to his frame in the last year. With the improvements to his body, Fike has made some strides on the mound, working his FB up to 88mph according to Trackman. He sat 85-87mph on the day with an average pitch speed of 85.9mph. His average spin rate was 1904rpm. He mixed in two breaking ball's in the low 70's with around 2000 rpm.

Scouting Report

5/15/19

6’ 185-pound frame with present strength. Quick, short arm action provided a fastball up to 84 MPH with good running action from his ¾ slot. Slider at 71 MPH flashed as a quality pitch with hard, late bite. Change up had good fade with similar arm speed to his fastball

6/6/18 - 5-foot-11, 165-pound frame. Fike touched 80 from a ¾ arm slot from the left side. Arm appeared late getting up at times. Intriguing arm speed. Overly linear to the plate, doesn’t fully rotate into lead hip, lead leg fails to fully stabilize as a result. Spike curveball was thrown at 63-64 mph with proper spin and shape. Could be thrown harder to produce tighter spin and break. Showed feel for his change up at 71 mph with some sink. Fike also showed ability as a position player where he showed a short, efficient swing from the right side, posting a 77 mph exit velocity. Also recorded a 79 mph outfield velocity and a solid 7.15 60-yard dash, making him an intriguing follow with the combination of size and athleticism.
