Updated Colorado 2021 Rankings

John Cackowski
Director of Scouting

The 2021 class is quickly growing up with many players gaining valuable experience at the varsity level this spring. All across the PBR landscape, our boots-on-the-ground staff has quickly become acquainted with the impressive crop of freshmen. They have made themselves known with loud performances in games, as well as exhibiting strong tool sets that will continue to develop.

Prep Baseball Report Colorado has had the opportunity to cover amateur baseball like no other organization has ever been able to do before in the state of Colorado. Between scouting numerous games this spring and having a great opportunity to see more 2021 grads at the Class of 2021 Preview in May, Underclass Invitational in January, the Centennial State games last June, the summer Colorado Scout League, and the Top Prospect Games last summer. We were able to create our first 2021 ranking. The first ranking we went to 25 players, and we have grown it to 55. Next ranking update will be after our Underclass Invitational in January 2019 at Slammers South in Centennial.

Cale Lansville RHP / SS / ThunderRidge, CO / 2021

Coming in at No. 1. Committed to LSU.  Coming off a successful summer circuit in which he made USA Baseball's 15U national team, Lansville’s quick, strong arm produces fastballs that can run up to 88 mph. Still developing physically, it is impressive to see what the 5-foot-10, 147-pound right-hander is able to pump out. Moving athletically through a clean delivery, Lansville drives strong off his back leg enabling him to work further down the mound as his quick arm goes through a short swing before delivering out of a high ¾ slot. The ball jumps out of his hand as he gets extension towards the plate. Perhaps even more intriguing about Lansville is his ability to spin a firm, 75-77 slider that shows the makings of a swing and miss pitch. He couples that pitch with a changeup at 73-75 that he throws with fastball arm speed. Lansville is a wiry athlete who will be greatly aided by more strength in the future which should give his clean, quick arm a boost. Already established himself as No. 1 option on the mound for ThunderRidge. Threw 36 innings striking out 28 batters so far this spring carrying a 2.33 ERA.

Landon Boyd C / 3B / Legend , CO / 2021

Uncommitted. Sturdily built at 5-foot-11, 185-pounds with strong wrists and forearms, Boyd has a simple approach at the plate with his hands separating straight back in conjunction with a short stride before allowing his quick hands to whip the barrel through the zone on a flat plane. I was impressed with his ability to work gap to gap from both sides of the plate at the Future Games, and there is likely much more power on the way. Behind the dish, he presents a wide target with loose hips to go along with solid hands. His footwork is controlled and clean on throws to second base with accurate throws. Overall, Boyd’s knack for finding the barrel as a switch-hitting catcher will likely have plenty of schools courting him.

Radek Birkholz RHP / SS / Valor Christian, CO / 2021

Coming in at No. 3. 5-foot-10, 185-pound right hand hitting SS/RHP. 5-foot-10, 165 pounds. Still physically developing, athletic frame, wide balanced stance. Generates good bat whip through zone with bottom hand finish. Pull side power. Advanced bat speed. 87 mph exit velocity. Good actions at SS with good glove to hand transfer. Gains good ground to 1B with 77 mph arm velocity. Ran a 4.10 home to first. Was starting pitcher and winner for Valor in 4A state championship game.

Greysen Carter RHP / OF / Fairview, CO / 2021

Uncommitted. Coming in at No. 4. 6-foot-2, 185-pound switch hitting RHP/OF who ran a 7.30 60.  At the plate he stands balanced with a slight crouch from both sides.  He uses a big leg trigger to start the swing and loads hard on the back side.  Swing is level through the zone with good extension out front.  Exit velocity was 87 mph from both sides of the plate.  In the outfield he takes good angles and has a big arm from an over the top slot.  Arm played at 90 mph. Power pitcher on the mound with max effort in his delivery.  Drop and drive motion with good extension on the release.  Arm is over the top and live.  Fastball was 88-90 mph and over powered several hitters in his inning of work.  He mixed in a 64-66 mph curve with tight spin and 11/5 break.

Alex Champagne SS / 2B / Heritage, CO / 2021

Coming in at No. 5. 5-foot-7, 125-pound left hand hitting MIF. 5-foot-7, 125 pounds. Bats left throws right. Advanced bat speed for his age and size. Led all hitters with a 93 mph exit velocity at Underclass Invitational last spring. Advanced baseball instincts. Professional approach at the plate. Gets money's worth for sure at the plate. Simple load, short stride, then slight-up hill swing. Solid hands at SS with good hand to glove exchange. Quick feet. Gains good ground towards 1B. Can run. 4.15 home to first. Helped lead Heritage to 5A state championship game. Hit lead off all year for the Eagles.
