2023 BC New Year Open: Quick Hits II

Mitch Davidoff
Island Director, PBR British Columbia

We would like to thank all who participated in PBR BC's New Year Open. This was a great opportunity for players to get in front of our staff before teams begin heading outdoors for live-game action and preseason tournaments. The event, and all open events, serve as identifiers for PBR Canada Selects rosters that attend national and regional PBR events such as the Future and Jr. Future Games, West Coast Games and our Best of the West team.

Many players impressed during their individual workouts at the showcase. Below we conclude our post-event coverage with scouting notes and reports on three more standouts from the event.

2023 BC NEW YEAR OPEN - Quick hits II

Jonah Chang SS / 2B / Lambrick Park Secondary School, BC / 2024

Chang is a 5-foot-10, 175-pound infielder out of the Victoria Eagles 2024 class. Chang possesses a quality bat that showcased exit velos in the low 90s. He was our exit velo leader at the event, topping 94mph but has been upwards to 96mph in previous events. The swing possesses solid whip to his pull side and timing forgiveness through the zone which helped him obtain a 70% sweet spot percentage.

Defensively, Chang has solid fundamentals and can play any position on the infield with confidence. He shows good footwork and smooth hands in the infield with throws across the diamond at 82mph. His poise on-field is a by-product of his baseball IQ and game preparation. Look for his bat to build upon a strong offensive 2022 as a rookie in the PBL.

Tate Martin SS / RHP / Vancouver College, BC / 2024

One of the top 10 2024s in BC, Tate Martin, is looking to carry his momentum after a strong 2022 season. He moves into the premier league as a middle of the order bat for the North Shore Twins. Despite Martin’s quiet, effortless load, his barrel gets through the zone in a hurry. With a good balance of power and contact, Martin has the potential to be one of the top 2024 bats in BC this upcoming season.

With steady footwork and accuracy across the diamond, his 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame projects him as a corner infielder. High-ceiling prospect looking to create some buzz this spring/summer.

Xander Guedes 3B / RHP / Seycove Secondary, BC / 2025

Guedes is a promising product of the North Shore Twins. The big-bodied 2025, 3B/RHP is framed up at 6-foot-2, 190-pounds. The swing has no shortage of raw power as he led the field in distance with a 344ft shot as well as a top exit velocity of 93.2mph.

In terms of pitching, he works with a three-pitch mix and groups it well with his over-the-top arm action. Guedes fills the zone with good ride on the fastball, a late breaking slider and complimentary depth to his changeup. Guedes will be a two-way underclassmen to keep tabs on as the season starts up.
