Canadian Junior National Team Roster Announced: A Look At The Names From BC

As the Canadian Junior National Team announced its roster yesterday for its annual Spring Training Trip to St. Petersburg, and as always, it’s highlighted by the match-up versus the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin at Florida Auto Exchange on March 17, which typically sees many Canadians in the lineup for Toronto, as well many familiar big league names.

The roster of 33 was announced and there were six players who hail from BC named to the roster. We take a look at six players here with the scheduled days for pitchers added, but make a quick trade off and include right-hander Zach McQuaid while we leave the number one prospect in Alberta, Damiano Palmegiani to Alberta scouting director Andrew Maclean.

See here for roster, rotation, and schedule.

2018 Grads

Tate Dearing RHP / OF / Earl Marriott, BC / 2018

Dearing is one of the senior members of the staff and has taken some big steps since last fall. The Polk State commit, was up to 92 earlier this spring from a compact delivery without a lot of restrictions. The ball jumps out of his hand and there could be some more in the tank because of his athleticism and shorter arm action. Has displayed a very effective curveball that is tight with downward motion. He has garnered some attention early in the year and this will be a good opportunity to display his projectable pitchability on the mound.

Pitching Schedule:
March 17 vs Toronto (Dunedin)
March 21 vs Philadelphia (Walter Fuller)

Declan Dutton RHP / Saint Georges, BC / 2018

Dutton has added some strength to his wiry frame resulting in a bit of a velocity bump. Earlier this year he sat 86-88, up a few ticks from the fall, with some natural movement and deception. His change up has really developed with good fade from the same arm slot. The combination of his pitches, arm slot and action make it very difficult to pick the ball out of his hand. The UBC commit has made some improvements over the last year and will be a nice addition to the Thunderbirds rotation.

Pitching Schedule:
March 19 vs Ft. Lauderdale All Stars (Dunedin)
March 23 vs Baltimore (Twin Lakes, Sarasota)

Zachery McQuaid RHP / OF / Maxwell Heights, BC / 2018

The Ontario native, now pitching for the Langley Blaze, has a very quick arm and routinely touches 89 miles per hour. It’s a compact delivery with some moving parts but he does a pretty good job repeating his delivery. His curveball is pretty advance with hard downward movement and late bite, has the potential to be a good strikeout pitch. McQuaid remains uncommitted and the move to BC should help increase exposure among west coast schools.

Pitching Schedule:
March 18 vs Philadelphia (Walter Fuller)
March 22 vs Team Canada Intersquad (Walter Fuller)

2019 Grad

Carter Morris RHP / W.L. Seaton, BC / 2019

Morris was one of the break pitchers at T12 last fall displaying a projectable 3 pitch mix with a loose arm and smooth mechanics. His fastball hit 87 miles per hour with some cut and decent command, more velocity should emerge with added strength and a better leg drive. He has displayed an effective slider with tight, downward rotation and solid feel for the change up. Both are swing and miss pitches. Morris is one of the best pitchers in the country in the 2019 class and remains uncommitted.

Pitching Schedule:
March 18 vs Philadelphia (Walter Fuller)
March 22 vs Team Canada Intersquad (Walter Fuller)

2020 Grads

Theo Millas RHP / 3B / Alpha Secondary, BC / 2020

Millas is among the top pitching prospects in the country backed by his size, effortless mechanics and projectable pitch arsenal. The fastball is up to 89 this year with good action into right handed hitters which results in a lot of uncomfortable swings. The curveball is tight with good downward movement and the change has downward action from the same arm slot. Both pitches are projectable with all the signs of swing and miss potential. Millas has an advance feel for pitching and is capable of being successful against both left handed and right-handed hitters. He is not only on track to be an early commit but also the best pitching prospect in Canada in the near future.

Pitching Schedule:
March 19 vs Ft. Lauderdale All Stars (Dunedin)
March 23 vs Baltimore (Twin Lakes, Sarasota)

Justin Thorsteinson LHP / OF / Langley, BC / 2020

Already committed to perennial power Oregon State, Thorsteinson is an intriguing two way player and the youngest member of the Junior National Team. On the mound, the 6’3” lefty is loose with a repeatable delivery and smooth mechanics. The fastball has been up to 89 mph this year with some natural cut on a good downward plane. He has shown the ability to command the fastball and there should be more in the tank. Off speed continues to develop but he has shown the ability to spin a breaking ball. He also displays good bat speed and quick hands at the plate with good balance. Power should come with added strength and incorporating more loft into his swing. There will be a lot of eyes on Thorsteinson in Florida later this month and that should continue over the next two years as he continues to develop.

Pitching Schedule:
March 19 vs Ft. Lauderdale All Stars (Dunedin)
March 23 vs Baltimore (Twin Lakes, Sarasota)
