Lathrop, CA - The California State Games provided an abundance of uncommitted talent across the board. The class of 2021 showed uncommitted college ready players with different skill sets that could help college programs across the country fill holes in their rosters down the line. Blake Penso became the first 2021 uncommitted player to commit after the State Games, with UC - Irvine respectively. Here we take a look at ten 2021 uncommitted players that are worth a second look.
Timothy Reeve, Truckee (CA), 2021
Positional Profile: OF/RHP Intriguing 2-way prospect.
Body: 5-10, 180-pounds. Well proportioned, medium, athletic frame
Arm: RH. OF - 91 mph.
Hit: RHH. Narrow, slightly open stance with mild leg kick and stride. Violent, aggressive, uppercut swing with excellent excellent bat speed
Power: Projectable power. Multiple 98 MPH exit velocities on Trackman and a 70% hard hit ball average.
Run: 6.88 runner in the 60.
Delivery: Works out of set position exclusively with a hike 3/4 slot.
Arm Action: RH. Clean
FB: T87, 86-87 mph. Shows life through the strike zone and a maximum spin rate of 2286 RPM's
CB: 68-70 mph. Displays late, downward biting action and a maximum induced vertical break of -15.3°
CH: Plays well off his fastball with a 8-9 MPH separation.
SPLT: 76-78 mph.
Matthew Halbach, Archbishop Mitty (CA), 2021
Positional Profile: OF/RHP
Body: 6-3, 190-pounds. Long, athletic frame that has more room for good weight and muscle.
Defense: Athletic, rangy and can cover a ton of ground.
Arm: OF - 88 mph. Above average and accurate; plays on the mound as well.
Hit: RHH. Wide base, slightly open with neutral hand position. Aggressive approach to ball with excellent bat speed. Impacts the baseball and it's loud
Power: 101 mph exit velocity. Over the fence power potential as he begins to fill out.
Run: 7.24 runner in the 60.
Delivery: High 3/4, falls to 1B side.
Arm Action: Clean
FB: T87, 83-86 mph.
CB: 75-76 mph.
SL: 74-75 mph.
CH: 78-79 mph.
Ruben Vera III, Armijo (CA), 2021
Positional Profile: SS/2B
Body: 5-10, 160-pounds.
Defense: Quality feel at shortstop, went 3/3 at balls hit his way during the competitive simulation. Active feet, proper prep step, head down and glove out in front. Lacks elite lateral quickness but has the ability to play throughout the infield.
Arm: RH. INF - 84 mph. Two-way arm strength, 84 mph from short to first, able to make throws from multiple angles.
Hit: RHH. Relaxed even stance, slight athletic bend, hands rest at shoulder height, high back elbow, hands have soft lift, small stride towards contact. Barrel shows ideal on-plane efficiency through the zone at 69%. Works through the ball with a high two-hand finish, able to show some pop with a 89 mph exit velocity.
Power: 89 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Run: 7.80 runner in the 60.
Delivery: Compact delivery, engages lower half, repeatable, clean follow through.
Arm Action: RH. Short arm path, repeatable release point helps him command the zone, offspeed arm action same as fastball.
FB: T84, 81-83 mph. Quality high school fastball with the ability to locate side-to-side and up-and-down.
CB: 67-69 mph. Struck out five of seven batters with four of the strikeouts by way of the curveball. Commands the pitch well, flipping over early in the count for strikes and able to bury ahead in the count.
CH: 73-75 mph. Changeup compliments his curveball and fastball, arm side fade with late diving action, able to throw for strikes.
Eli Rainey, Chico (CA), 2021
Positional Profile: OF/RHP
Body: 6-4, 190-pounds.
Defense: Slow to field, quick to release, old school crow hop helps set himself up well.
Arm: RH. OF - 89 mph. Above-average outfield arm, line drive throws at 89 mph, arm works well.
Hit: RHH. Simple set up, some coil, relaxed hands. Eye test bat speed and measured bat speed of 75.8 mph. Bat to ball swing path, some swing and miss to the swing, projectable power.
Power: 88 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Run: 7.16 runner in the 60.
Delivery: Simple windup, some repeatability, overall potential.
Arm Action: RH. Arm is best tool, easy 87 mph, plenty of room for more with emphasis on pitching.
FB: T87, 84-86 mph. Fastball shows back spin, gets on hitters quick thanks to high release point, 2064 average spin rate.
SL: 77-79 mph. Raw pitch, showed signs of swing and miss ability, released with same arm speed as fastball.
Edgar Rosales, Long Beach Poly (CA), 2021
Positional Profile: 2B/3B
Body: 5-7, 160-pounds. Small, compact, muscular build.
Defense: Athletic movements with proper mechanics seen in high level middle infielders. Smooth glove to hand transfers and can throw on the run from different angles
Arm: RH. INF - 88 mph. Above average. Shows proper mechanics with zip and carry on throws to 1B. INF velocity at 88 MPH
Hit: RHH. Balanced, pigeon-toed setup in the box with high leg kick trigger Aggressive and direct to ball with some violence. Contact is loud
Power: 92 mph exit velocity. Gap-to-gap currently and will have high doubles totals
Run: 6.84 runner in the 60.
