Area Code Games: Day 2 Notebook

By Nathan Rode
National Supervisor

LONG BEACH, CA—The second day of the 2014 Area Code Games saw the remaining four teams go through batting practice sessions and another slate of three games, with the Nationals (Southeast) and Yankees (Northeast) seeing their first action. After OF Nick Plummer (Brother Rice HS, MI) and RHP/1B Luken Baker (Oak Ridge HS, TX) went deep on Monday, OF Demi Orimoloye (St. Matthews Catholic HS, ON) joined the home run club with a three-run shot to left field off of LHP Juan Hillman (Olympia HS, FL) in the first inning. Orimoloye has a long swing, but he has very good strength and hooked around an 89 mph fastball for the home run. He also drove in a run with an infield single and then walked and scored on a wild pitch in his third at-bat. He looks like a wide receiver, standing at a long, lean 6-foot-4, 225 pounds. He runs well and got down the line in 4.2 seconds on the infield single.

Here are some more notes from the second day of action…

+ LHP Brendon Little (Conestoga HS, PA) started for the Yankees and allowed a run on one hit and two walks while striking out four. Little stands way over on the third base side of the rubber and takes a small moonwalk step in his windup. He struggled with his control some and tended to leave his fastball up, but sat 89-90 mph, touching 91. He showed feel for a changeup and a sharp curveball.
