Chatfield Scout Day Wrap Up

John Cackowski
Director of Scouting

The Prep Baseball Report’s  Chatfield Scout Day took place Tuesday October 17th at Chatfield High School.   This was the first year for this event. Strong talent was on display with members of the 2019 - 2023 classes participating in the event. Prospects came together in a pro-style workout to strut their stuff in front of the PBR scouting staff.

Following is a look at top performances in a number of measurable categories. Click Here for a statistical breakdown of this event.

Quick Hits

+ Over 35 Chatfield Chargers showed up to the scout day. Former head coach Matt Johnson, who has stepped down so he can watch his son Tanner Johnson play at Garden City, has been replaced by first year head coach Daniel Medina, who has assembled a strong coaching staff with a lot of experience. The Chargers, just two years removed from the 5A state championship game, look to reload in 2018 with a solid core of seniors led by Blake Dickman, Kasey Koppelmaa, and Aaron Ross. Look for a solid junior and sophomore class to mix in to help Chatfield compete for the Jeffco League title, and the program is loaded with left-handed hitters.

+ 2018 3B Aaron Ross, 6-foot, 200 pounds. Bats and throws right.  Wide, balanced stance.  showcased good bat speed in the live round with pull power. Big strong player, 85 mph exit velo. At 3B had quick feet and soft hands. Gained good ground towards 1B with a 72 mph arm velo. Could be a middle of the lineup hitter for the Chargers

+ 2019 SS Sam Low, 6-0, 150 pounds. Bats and throws right. Tall stance, toe-tap stride. Had a good live round with good bat speed. Right field power. Let's the ball get deep. 89 mph exit velo. Showed well defensively throwing 85 mph from SS, also highest at the event. Projectable athlete. With added weight can gain a lot more power.

+ 2019 2B Luke LaChance, 5-foot-9 140 pounds. Bats and throws right. Solid second baseman. Ran a 6.98 60, second best time at the event. At the plate swing is level through the zone, line drive hitter, gap to gap. 85 mph exit velo. Solid skills defensively. Good glove to hand exchange, gains good ground towards 1B. 76 across the diamond. Starter last year as sophomore who hit over .290 stealing 10 bases.

+  2019 RHP/1B John Cullom, 6-foot, 195 pounds. Bats and throws right. Good live round, gap to gap power, solid bat speed. Bottom hand finish. Strong kid. 87 mph exit velo. Bat stays in zone long time, with good extension through the ball. At 1B got off bag quick, was 73 mph across diamond. On the mound was square to the plate, good extension from high 3/4 arm slot. Fastball lived 78-80 mph. Good three pitch mix with a 64 mph change up, and 62 mph curve ball with 11/5 shape. Could push for a starting spot on mound this spring.

+ 2019 LHP Dalton Dillard, 6-foot-1, 150 pounds. Like his projectability. Arm was loose, worked well. 78 mph fastball that can increase with added weight. Good down angle. Change up thrown at same arm speed as fastball at 68 mph, and curve was 63-64.

+ 2019 C Jack Kornegay, 6-foot-1, 180 pounds. Bats left, throws right. Nice left-handed hitting catcher. Slightly closed stance, ball jumped off bat in live round. 83 mph exit velo. Behind dish solid receiving skills. 2.06-2.10 pop-time off a coach. 72 mph exit velo. Like the left-handed/catcher potential.

+ 2019 2B/OF Michael Zarlengo, 5-foot-10, 140 pounds. Bats left throws right. Solid round of hitting with power potential. 82 mph exit velo. Was 77 mph across the diamond from SS.

+ The 2020 class for Chatfield looks like a solid class. Starting with 2020 OF/RHP Mathew Gelwick. 5-foot-9, 140 pounds. Bats and throws right.   Ran a 6.8 60 time. Top at the event. Twitchy type athlete. Open stance at the plate, quick hands to the ball, line drive hitter. 85 mph exit velo off a tee. In the OF threw 75 mph from right. On the mound was 77 mph with fb, change was 64-65 mph.

+ 2020 RHP/OF Jacob Roybal, 5-foot-11, 145 pounds. Bats and throws right. Had one of the better arms at the event. On the mound has a solid mechanical foundation. High 3/4 arm slot with an 80 mph fastball. Change is a little fast at 76 mph. Nice tight 11/5 spin on curveball at 72 mph.

+ 2020 3B/1B Landon Gaber. 6-foot, 165 pounds. Bats and throws right. Athletic body frame. Solid round of hitting. Gap to gap power with solid contact. 82 mph exit velo. Solid glove to hand exchange at 3B. 74 mph across the diamond.

+ 2021 LHP/OF Colby Cruiser. 5-foot-4, 105 pounds. Bats and throws left. When this kid grows is going to be a stud. Crafty lefty now with moxie on the mound. Pitches to both sides of the plate with a good 3-pitch mix. Only in upper 60's now, but will be a stud when he grows. Has a feel to pitch.
