Colorado Senior Games: Catching Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report’s 2018 Senior Games took place on July 25th and 26th at Metropolitan State College. Strong talent was on display in the first year of the event. 2018 Seniors showed up for the two day event that featured both a pro-style workout and games each day.

The other day we started the breakdown of players with the corners, outfielders, and middle infielders. Today we continue with the catchers. Players are listed in alphabetical order.
Cole Crader, C/OF, Grandview
6-foot-1, 175 pounds. Bats and throws right. Ran a 7.10 at this event. He is balanced at the plate with a short stride and quick hand load on the pitch. He shows good leg drive through the zone and bat travels slightly uphill. Exit velocity was 90 MPH. Behind the plate he shows good athletic actions and a quick release. Feet and shoulders stay square through the plate and he delivers from an over the top arm slot. Pop-time was 2.18 with an arm velocity of 75 MPH.
Colton Goldfarb, C/OF, Niwot
6-foot-1, 180 pounds. Bats left, throws right. Ran a 7.50 at this event. At the plate he starts balanced and square. He uses a high leg kick and quick load on the pitch. Bat slightly wraps around his head before traveling an uphill swing path. Exit velocity was 86 MPH and his swing creates good back spin and carry on the ball. Behind the plate he shows good hands a quick transfer on throws to the bases. He delivers over the top and body stays on-line during the throw. Arm velocity was 74 MPH and pop time was 2.19.
Ryan Hutchinson, C/OF, Heritage
5-foot-11, 160 pounds. Bats right and throw right. Ran a 7.53 at this event. At the plate he is balanced and slightly crouched. He drives through the zone with his lower half and hits off a firm front side. Bat travels level through the zone with good extension out in front. Exit velocity was 84 MPH and during the live round he hit several balls deep into the left center gap. Behind the plate he shows good athletic actions. Glove to hand transfer is quick and he delivers an accurate ball from an over the top arm slot. Arm velocity was 75 MPH and pop-time with quick feet was 2.04.
Garrison Niemann, C, Rock Canyon
6-foot-2, 190 pounds. Bats and throws right. Ran a 7.60 at this event. At the plate he starts balanced and drive hard forward with his stride. Weight transfer is quick and explosive and exit velocity was 95 MPH. Swing path is slightly uphill and during the live round he showed good pull power. Behind the plate he compact and low in the zone. He gets the ball to the throwing window quickly and delivers an accurate throw to the bag. Feet stay square and delivery is over the top. He showcased a 75 MPH arm and a 2.07 pop-time.
Nate Roach, C/SS, Steamboat Springs
6-foot-1, 165 pounds. Bats and throws right. Ran a 7.60 at this event. At the plate his swing is simple with few moving parts. He stays tall through the swing and bat travels level through the hitting area. Weight transfer onto the front side at contact. Exit velocity was 93 MPH and his ball has good carry to the gaps. Behind the plate he moves well on balls in the dirt and shows good hands when receiving. He has a long arm and delivers from over the top. Arm velocity was 77 MPH with accuracy to the bag. He showcased a 1.98 pop-time.
Brock Rodrigues, C/OF, Pueblo County
5-foot-8, 145 pounds, Bats and throws right. Ran a 7.20 at this event. At the plate he starts balanced with hand held high in the zone. Swing path is uphill and he collapses his back side at contact. During the live round he showed good bat control and hit the ball to all fields. Exit velocity was 87 MPH. Behind the plate he is athletic and quick. He showed soft hands receiving and quick feet to get square when throwing down. Delivery is over the top and accurate to the bag. Pop-time was 2.18 and arm velocity was 75 MPH.
Poppy Rodriguez, C/RHP, Mountain Vista
5-foot-10, 205 pounds. Bats and throws right. Has a lot of pre-swing rhythm before he is on time. Leg kick stride that comes back then forward. Hands load down and back. Strong kid. Barrel is level through the zone with bottom hand finish. Line drive, gap to gap hitter. 82 mph exit velo off the tee. Solid receiver behind dish. Was 73 mph to 2B with 2.16 to 2.2 pop-time of a coach. On the mound pounds the strike zone with a 74-76 mph fastball touching 78. Comes from over the top arm slot, short on back side.
Nicolas Rodriquez, C/2B, Columbine
5-foot-10, 155 pounds. Bats and throws right. Ran a 7.80 at this event. At the plate he stand balanced and uses a short stride and quick load to get to the launch position. Swing path is slightly uphill with good bat control to all fields. Exit velocity was 89 MPH with good power to the left center gap. Behind the plate he shows good athletic actions and quick feet from his MIF play to get into throwing position. Pop-time was 2.10 with a 73 MPH arm to the bag. Up the middle he shows good instinct and anticipation. He moves well to the ball and shows soft hands when fielding. He delivers from a high ¾ arm slot at 73 MPH across the diamond.
Derek Schroeder, C/2B, Grandview
6-foot-1, 190 pounds. Bats and throws right. Ran a 7.25 at this event. At the plate he is balanced with a long stride on the pitch. Weight slides forward and he hits off a firm front side at contact. Swing path is level with good extension out front. Exit velocity was 86 MPH with good pull side power. Behind the plate he is solid. He handles all pitchers well and shows good actions receiving in the game. His pop-time was 2.00 and he delivered a 75 MPH accurate ball to the bag.
