Colorado Top Prospect Games: 3B Analysis

By John Cackowski
Director of Scouting

The Colorado Top Prospect Games took place on Saturday August 16th and Sunday August 17th, at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, CO. This year’s event featured several talented, uncommitted players in Colorado’s 2015 through 2018 classes.  In our next positional analysis we will take a look at the top third baseman.  Dakota Ridge Doug Case takes home top honors showing legit gap to gap power, great base running instincts, and clutch hitting.

Here’s a look at the top third base prospects at this year’s Colorado Top Prospect Games:

Top Third baseman Prospects

1. Doug Case, 3B, Dakota Ridge, 2015
6-0, 195-pound right-handed hitting third baseman is currently uncommitted. Case stands tall with a balanced stance, hands load back smoothly and has a short stride, and strong lower half creating a short, uphill bat path with good extension and above average 83 mph exit velocity. Case showed gap to gap power and was the offensive star of the games by going 1 for 1 with a triple and two sac flies on Saturday, and 1 for 1 with a sac fly on Sunday. Case led the Games with 4 RBI's. Defensively, has a good frame for third base, throwing 83 mph across the diamond from short, over the top arm action with accuracy.  Ran a 7.37 60 yard dash

2. Marcelo Sanchez, 3B/RHP, Lakewood, 2016
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitting third baseman/right-handed pitcher with strong athletic build. Hits from a fluid balanced stance, has a quiet load and utilizes a short stride with a toe tap. Shows fast bast speed with a good approach hitting line drives up the middle producing 82 mph exit velocity off the tee. During batting practice he peppered the L-Screen multiple times as hard as you could hit the ball up the middle. Defensively, has a good frame for third base, throwing 74 mph across the diamond from short, over the top arm action with accuracy.  Ran a 7.30 60.  On the mound, utilizes a compact, ¾ arm slot and comes squared to the plate throwing off two feet. Easy effort, slow tempo, landing square than falling off delivery that produces 76-77 mph fastballs from the windup and stretch that showed good downward movement.  Curve ball ranged from 64-69  with 11/5 shape that was also thrown for strikes and had good late bite at times.

3. Thomas Nagel, 3B/RHP, Dakota Ridge, 2016
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting third baseman/right-handed pitcher with lanky, athletic, projectable frame.  Hits from a tall, balance set-up, hands wrap back, utilizes a short stride with leg kick. Produces an inside out swing with gap-gap power. Shows good bat speed that produces 79 mph exit velocity. Defensively, has a good frame for third base, throwing 78 mph across the diamond from short, over the top arm action with accuracy.  Ran a 6.82 60 which is pretty fast for a corner infielder.  On the mound, utilizes long, loose, high ¾ arm slot.  Easy effort, slow tempo, tall-and-fall type delivery produces 78-79 mph fastballs from the windup and stretch.  Slows arm on 68-69 mph breaking ball with 12/6 shape that was also thrown for strikes.  Nagel is starting to develop into his body and is an interesting follow over the next two years, especially if his velocity takes a jump into the mid to upper 80’s.

4. Paul Degracia, 3B/RHP, Highlands Ranch, 2017
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitting third baseman hits from a wide, open setup, hands load and back smoothly, stride is short, hands stay quiet pre-pitch, with short, uphill batpath producing line drives with good carry from gap-to-gap and 82 mph exit velocity.  Let's the ball get deep and has a good approach at the plate with maturity to go the other way. Does a good job of utilizing lower half in his swing.  Defensively can get a little flashy but he stays low fielding the baseball showcasing very good hands, throwing 80 mph across the diamond from a short, high ¾ arm slot with accuracy.  Ran 7.47 60 yard dash. On the mound has a long-short arm action with good balance point and max effort delivery. He is in-line to the plate with good down angle producing fastballs 79-82, which is good velocity for a young 2017. Curve ball comes in at 66 mph with 12/6 action and nice bite. Nice looking prospect going into sophomore year. Could be one of the states better 2017's.
