Fall Prospect Games Catcher Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report Colorado ran the Fall Prospect ID on September 12th and 13th at Highlands Ranch High School.  40+ players competed in games and a pro-style showcase for the PBR staff. Over the course of the next week, we will bring you positional analysis of the Fall Prospect ID.  Starting our look is the catching position.

Catcher Analysis (Listed Alphabetically)

David Farmer, 2016, Brighton High School, C/INF/RHP
A 6-foot-0, 185-pound right-handed hitting multi-positional player who is at home behind the plate, but showed well in the infield and on the mound.  Farmer moves well behind the plate and uses a quick release to record pop-times of 2.18-2.20 with good accuracy to the base.  In the field he has fluid movement on ground balls and does a nice job of fielding through the ball.  His arm velocity was 80 MPH at this event. Farmer took the mound and showed a 78 MPH fastball with good command of both sides of the late. He also featured a 67-68 MPH curve with late break.  At the plate he starts balanced, but a slight leg kick and slow load puts him on his backside. He shows good leg drive and turns well on the ball middle in. He had an 84 MPH exit velocity.  He ran a 7.88 60.

Jarod Graham, 2016, Grandview High School, C/OF
A 5-foot-7, 135-pound right-hand hitting catcher, ran a 7.57 60 at this event. Behind the plate he is quiet and shows good body control when blocking pitches.  His pop-times were 2.12-2.26 with accuracy to the bag. His arm velocity was 72 MPH. At the plate he hits from a balanced stance with a slight stride for timing. Good leg drive and turn allows for good power to the left center gap. He had a 71 MPH exit velocity. 

Danny Pricket, 2016, Brighton High School, C/3B/RHP
A 5-foot-7, 195-pound right-hand hitting catcher/infielder who showed well both behind the plate and at 3rd base.  He has soft hands and receives the ball well; he showed quick motions on throws to second base and had pop-times of 2.18-2.20. In the field he showed good movement on balls to his backhand and he gets the ball in the throwing window quickly, his arm velocity was 85 MPH.  At the plate he hits from an upright stance with a big leg kick for timing. Hands stay close to his body and extend at contact. He had an 84 MPH exit velocity.  On the mound he showed an 82 MPH fastball with good command of the outside of the zone. He also showed a 65-66 MPH curve with gradual break. He ran a 7.5 60.  

Matthew Sims, 2017, Weld Central High School, C/OF
A 5-foot-7, 180-pound right-hand hitting catcher/outfielder who showed well at the Fall Prospect ID.  He displayed a quiet body and soft hands while receiving pitches and put his throws on the bag. His pop-times were 2.26-2.31.  From the outfield he moves well on balls to his glove side and does a nice job of getting behind the ball.  His arm velocity was 70 MPH. At the plate he hits from an open stance with a high leg kick to bring him square.  He shows good leg drive through the zone, which produced an 83 MPH exit velocity.  He ran a 7.56 60.
