Over the course of the next week, PBR Colorado will break down the Preseason All-State event by position.  We being our look with the catching position.

 

Landon Boyd C / 3B / Legend , CO / 2021

A 5-foot-11, 190-pound switch hitting catcher who ran 6.94 60. At the plate he has a balanced set up with a strong lower half. Short stride and load on the swing with explosive hands and good extension out front. Pull side power from the right side with an uphill path and high finish. Whole field approach on the left side, with the ability to hit the ball to all fields. Exit velocity was 90 mph off live pitching from the right side and 85 mph off live pitching from the left side. Feet are quick behind the plate with a small jab step getting in line to a quick exchange. Arm action is quick with arm speed throwing from a high three-quarter arm slot at 75 mph. Throws showed carry with pop times ranging from 2.03-2.06. Ranges well at third base with quick feet and athletic actions. Quick glove to hand transfer with a high 3/4 arm slot and accuracy to the bag. Arm plays at 82 mph across the diamond.

 

 

 

Tony Castonguay C / 3B / Grandview , CO / 2020

A 5-foot-11, 190-pound switch hitting catcher who ran a 6.89 60. At the plate his swing mirrors itself on both sides of the plate. Strong load on a lift and place stride. From the right side he has good extension and drive though the baseball. Weight stays back with a strong lower half. Exit velocity was 90 mph off live pitching. From the left side he gets out on his front side and drives the ball in the gaps. Uphill path and high finish. Gains ground on the ball with the feet. Balanced and ready to throw after a quick exchange, short arm action with arm speed throwing from a high three-quarter arm slot. Throws showed carry, velocity was 75 mph, and pop times ranged from 1.97-2.05. At short he is athletic and attacks the ball. Quick glove to hand exchange and throws from a high 3/4 slot with accuracy.

 

 

 

Owen Best C / 1B / Regis Jesuit , CO / 2020

A 6-foot-205-pound left hand hitting catcher who ran a 7.80 60.  Has some juice hitting from the left side with a square athletic stance and a pronounced leg kick. Lands on line and hands back before firing the lower half with some explosion. Has some hand strength and whip getting the barrel through the zone with uphill tilt and stayed on the ball through extension. Exit velocity was 87 mph off live pitching. Good actions behind the plate with a small jab step getting in line to a quick exchange. Arm action is quick with arm speed throwing from a high three-quarter arm slot at 71 mph. Throws showed carry with pop times ranging from 1.90-2.12.

 

 

 


Josh Beattie C / Lakewood, CO / 2020

A 6-foot, 175-pound left had hitting catcher who ran a 6.87 60. Hands load back with a slight bat wrap. Hands are quick and strong through the zone and bat has a uphill tilt showing some gap to gap power with an exit velo of 90 mph off live pitching. Lower half finishes with some aggression to a high finish. Feet are quick behind the plate with a small jab step getting in line to a quick exchange. Arm action is from a high three-quarter arm slot at 71 mph. Pop times ranging from 2.10-2.12

 

 

 

Zachery Pettofrezzo C / 3B / Poudre, CO / 2020

A 6-foot-2, 175-pound right hand hitting catcher who ran a 7.16 60. Quick pick up and put down striding on line, hands move back and elbow slots, bat gets on plane early, and finishes with uphill tilt. Exit velocity was 90 mph off live pitching showing strength and bat speed with power potential. Swing is smooth with good timing at contact. Show athletic actions behind the plate with an over the top smooth release. Ball has good carry to the bag and arm played at 76 mph. pop times were 2.01-2.10. Stands tall on the mound and drives hard to the plate from balance. Short stride and throws well over his front foot. Arm is over the top and fastball was 80-83 mph. Curve flashed tight spin and sat 64-65 mph with 11/5 break.

 

 

 

Craig Kenny C / 3B / Regis Jesuit, CO / 2020

A 6-foot-1, 188-pound right hand hitting catcher who ran a 7.29 60. Hands load back with a slight bat wrap. Hands are quick and strong through the zone and bat has a uphill tilt showing some gap to gap power with an exit velo of 83 mph off live pitching. Lower half finishes with some aggression to a high finish. Feet are quick behind the plate with a small jab step getting in line to a quick exchange. Arm action is quick with arm speed throwing from a high three-quarter arm slot at 78 mph. Throws showed carry with pop times ranging from 1.91-1.98. 

 

 

 


Christopher Bollefer C / 1B / Grandview High School, CO / 2020

5-foot-10, 185-pound right hand hitting catcher who ran a 7.88 60. Quick pick up and put down striding on line, hands move back and elbow slots, bat gets on plane early, and finishes with uphill tilt. Exit velocity was 86 mph off live pitching showing strength and bat speed with power potential. Lower half finishes completely with aggression and maintains balance in the swing. Balanced and ready to throw after a quick exchange, short arm action with arm speed throwing from a high three-quarter arm slot. Throws showed carry, velocity was 71 mph, and pop times ranged from 2.03-2.12. In the field he moves well and showed a quick exchange at both 3rd and 1st. Arm is accurate across the diamond at 77 mph.

 

 

 

Blake Hopkins C / SS / Legend, CO / 2021

A 6-foot, 160-pound switch hitting catcher who ran a 7.01 60. Upright and slightly open stance that strides in landing closed. Hands make a direct load back before firing forward with a flat path and a high finish. Swing translates to line drive tendencies finishing the lower half completely. Exit velo was 77 mph off live pitching. Behind the plate Hopkins showed a quick clean exchange with a short three-quarter arm action. Throws were in line at 71 mph and pops ranged from 2.10-2.18. Defensively he moves well at short, solid fundamentals and quick exchange. Arm is high 3/4 and accurate to the bag. 

 

 

 

 

Kyle Radi C / OF / Wheat Ridge High School, CO / 2020

A 5-foot-11, 160-pound right hand hitting catcher who ran a 7.40 60. Tall and balanced at the plate with a quick load and stride. Swing path is flat through the zone and ball flight is good to the gaps. During the live round he hit to all fields. Exit velocity was 76 mph off live pitching. Clean exchange to a short arm action and throws from a high three-quarter arm slot at 75 mph. Pop times ranged from 2.09-2.16.

 

 

 

Jack Roode C / 1B / Kent Denver, CO / 2020

A 6-foot 190-pound left hand hitting catcher who ran a 7.95 60. Open stance starting slightly crouched. Strides forward and lands on line. Rolls front shoulder close at load with minimal hand movement. Bat path is flat with line drive tendencies and is quick out of the zone. Exit velocity was 82 mph off live pitching. Gained ground with the right foot on a jab step getting in line for the throw. Clean exchange to a short arm action and throws from a high three-quarter arm slot at 72 mph. Pop times ranged from 2.10-2.12.

 

 

 

Anthony Stevens C / 1B / Mountain Vista, CO / 2020

A 6-foot-225-pound right hand hitting catcher who ran a 7.99 60. Balanced set up at the plate with a slow load on to his back side. Slight uphill path to the ball with good extension out front. Showed good contact and bat control during the live round. Exit velocity was 88 mph off live pitching. Soft hands and actions behind the plate, arm gets to a high 3/4 slot with accuracy to the bag. Arm played at 69 mph and pop times were 2.09-2.11.

 

 

 

Tony Sus C / OF / Grandview, CO / 2020

A 6-foot 150-pound right hand hitting catcher who ran a 7.17 60. Upright and balanced stance with a long stride. Hands make a direct load back before firing forward with a flat path and a high finish. Swing translates to line drive tendencies finishing the lower half completely. Exit velo was 80 mph off live pitching. Behind the plate he shows good athletic actions and soft hands while receiving. Quick transfer and accuracy from a 77 mph arm with a 2.10-2.14 pop time. In the outfield he plays the ball well and fields through it. Arm is long and over the top with accuracy to the bag.

 

 

 

Matthew Verdugo C / 3B / Arvada West, CO / 2019

A 5-foot-10, 165-pound right hand hitting catcher who ran a 7.20 60. Athletic square stance with a long stride landing on line. Hands load back to an arm bar. Hands are quick getting started and bat path is short to the ball with some uphill tilt to the swing and a high finish. Has a strong lower half and finishes the hips completely on a swing that has some gap to gap power potential. Exit velo was 88 mph off live pitching. Feet were short and quick behind the plate to a quick clean exchange. Throws were in line from a short quick arm action and an over the top slot. Throw velocity was 73 mph and pop times ranged from 2.00-2.13. Plays a solid third base with athletic actions and quick feet. Strong over the top arm with accuracy across the diamond.
