Preseason All-State Invitational Outfield Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report’s Preseason All-State Invitational took place on February 28th at Highlands Ranch High School. 93 prospects showed up and strutted their stuff in a pro-style workout. Over the next several days the PBR Scouting staff will roll out position-by-position rankings of the event. Next up in our look is the outfield position.

Best of the Best:

Bailey Collins, Dakota Ridge High School (2016)
A 5-foot-11, 180-pound left hand hitting outfielder who ran a 7.18 60.  Balanced at the plate with a high leg kick and load back.  Hands drop slightly creating an uphill path through the zone.  Had a 91 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he moves well on the ball and shows a quick high ¾ release.  He has smooth actions fielding through ground balls.  He showcased a 78 MPH arm with accuracy.

Quin Cotton, Regis Jesuit High School (2016)
A 5-foot-11, 190-pound right hand hitting outfielder who ran a 7.03 60.  Narrow stance at the plate with a long stride on the pitch.  Displays quick hands and a level path through the ball.  Ball has good carry and left the yard repeatedly during the live round.  Good lower half produced an exit velocity of 100 MPH.  In the field he is quick to balls in the gap and fields through ground balls well.  Showcased an above average arm at 85 MPH with good accuracy to the bag.

Eric Cox, Cherokee Trail High School (2017)
A 5-foor-10, 205-pound right hand hitting outfielder who ran a 7.19 60.  Wide stance at the plate with a leg kick and load back.  Long arms through the hitting zone with a level swing path.  Good lower half produced a 92 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he is max effort through the ball and on the throw.  He is solid on ground balls and throws from a high ¾ arm slot.  Arm velocity was 84 MPH with some accuracy.

Mike Griebel, Columbine High School (2017)
A 5-foot-9, 180-pound right hand hitting outfielder who ran a 6.87 60.  Balanced at the plate with a short stride for timing.  Good weight transfer and a level path through the zone.  Finish is long out front and showed good gap to gap power.  He had a 91 MPH exit  velocity.  In the field he has great speed and closes on the ball well.  He showed smooth actions through the ball and throws from a high ¾ arm slot.  He had a 77 MPH arm velocity.

Sean Kelsen, Douglas County High School (2016)
A 6-foot-0, 175-pound right hand hitting outfielder/LHP who ran a 7.28 60.  Balanced and slightly open at the plate.  Leg kick brings him square with a slow load back.  Swing path is level through the zone and good extension out front creates a 92 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he moves well on balls left and right.  Good actions through the ball put in in good throwing position.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot with an 85 MPH arm.  On the mound he stand tall and gets to balance.  Does a nice job of working both sides of the plate.  Lands in-line with the plate and delivers over the top. 

Tanner Johnson, Chatfield High School (2016)
A 6-foot-1, 160-pound right hand hitting outfielder/RHP who ran a 6.91 60.  Balanced at the plate with a short stride on the pitch.  Hands load slightly back and drop on the pitch.  He shows good lower leg drive and showcased an 86 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he covers good ground and is solid through the ball.  He has a quick transfer and delivers an accurate 87 MPH ball.  He was identified as most athletic as this event.

Luke Kuberski, Green Mountain High School (2017)
A 6-foot-2, 185-pound right hand hitting outfielder/RHP who ran a 7.1 60.  Balanced at the plate with a toe tap for timing.  Level swing path with good gap-to-gap power.  Quick hands through the zone with good extension out front.  He had 96 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he moves well on balls in the gap.  He has good glove action on ground balls and gets rid of the ball quickly.  He showcased an 83 MPH arm with accuracy.

Chase Anderson, Columbine High School (2017)
A 6-foot-2, 188-pound right hand hitting OF/2B who ran a 7.22 60.  Balanced at the plate with a short stride and small load.  Good lower leg drive and rotation on the swing.  Swing path is level through the ball with extension out front.  He had an 88 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he showed good actions and glove work, working through the ball with a quick release.  He showcased and 83 MPH arm with accuracy.

Derek Cunningham, Boulder High School (2017)
A 6-foot-2, 190-pound right hand hitting outfielder/RHP who ran a 7.38 60.  Narrow set up with long stride on the pitch, hits of a firm front side and collapses his back leg at contact.  Swing is slightly uphill and he registered a 90 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he showed smooth actions on balls on the ground.  He throws over the top and delivers a cutable ball.  His arm velocity was 79 MPH.

TJ Felton, Mountain View High School (2017)
A 5-foot-9, 170-pound right hand hitting outfielder who ran a 7.22 60.  Balanced set up at the plate with a slight toe tap for timing.  Hands raise on the load and he shows good extension through the hitting zone.  Good lower half produced an 81 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he needs to attack a bit more, showed good actions on ground balls.  Throws from an over the top motion and had a 77 MPH arm velocity. 

Duke Frommer, Lakewood High School (2017)
A 5-foot-11, 175- pound right hand hitting outfielder who ran a 7.38 60.  Balanced at the plate with a high leg kick on the pitch.  Good weight transfer on the swing and level path through the zone.  Hits off a firm front side with an 88 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he throws from an over the top release and delivers an accurate ball.  Showed smooth actions on ground balls and had a 72 MPH arm velocity.

Jason Hall, ThunderRidge High School (2017)
A 5-foot-9, 157-pound right hand hitting outfielder who ran a 7.23 60.  Open at the plate with a long stride to get to square.  Hands warp back and drop slightly on the swing.  Slight up hill swing path creates a ball with carry.  Hits off a firm front side  and had an 83 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he shows good instincts and fields through the ground ball.  He throws from over the top and delivers an accurate ball at 76 MPH. 

Taed Heydinger, Bayfield High School (2016)
A 6-foot-1, 190-pound right hand hitting outfielder/RHP who ran a 7.44 60.  Balanced wide set up at the plate with a long stride.  Collapses on the back side at impact.  Arms are long through the zone with a slight uphill path.  He had an 88 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he moves well to the ball glove side and shows good actions through the ball.  Throws from a high ¾ arm slot and had an arm velocity of 83 MPH.  On the mound he stands tall with a high leg kick.  He lands in-line with the plate and delivers from a high ¾ arm slot.  Showed good command of the fast ball at 83 MPH and added a 68 MHP curve with 11/5 break and a 77 MPH change.

Tanner Johnson, Chatfield High School (2016)
A 6-foot-1, 160-pound right hand hitting outfielder/RHP who ran a 6.91 60.  Balanced at the plate with a short stride on the pitch.  Hands load slightly back and drop on the pitch.  He shows good lower leg drive and showcased an 86 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he covers good ground and is solid through the ball.  He has a quick transfer and delivers an accurate 87 MPH ball.

Patrick Kauffman, Denver East High School (2017)
A 6-foot-0, 190-pound right hand hitting outfielder who ran a 7.24 60.  Balanced and quiet at the plate with a short stride on the pitch.  Hands are quick through the zone with a level swing path.  Good extension out front at contact.  Hits off a firm front side with an 85 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he shows good smooth actions through the ball and delivers from straight over the top.  Arm velocity was 76 MPH with accuracy.

John Krysa, Mountain Vista High School (2017)
A 6-foot-0, 170-pound left hand hitting outfielder who ran a 7.31 60.  Balanced at the plate with a short stride and then toe tap on the swing.  Hands stay level through the zone with good extension out front.  Good lower half produced an exit velocity of 84 MPH.  In the field he moves well on the ball and gets into throwing position quickly.  He delivers from a high ¾ arm slot and showcased a 72 MPH arm with accuracy.

Sawyer Lofstedt, Monarch High School(2017)
A 5-foot-10, 170-pound right hand hitting outfielder who ran a 6.9 60.  Balanced and crouched at the plate with long load back on the pitch.  Hands drop slightly on the swing and travel on an uphill path.  Needs to improve lower body on contact.  Showcased an 80 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he attacks balls in front of him and moves well to the glove side.  Throws from a high ¾ arm slot and delivers a cutable ball at 74 MPH.

Ben Meraz, Prairie View High School (2016)
A 5-foot-10, 190-pound right hand hitting outfielder who ran a 7.12 60.  Tall and balanced at the plate.  Slight leg kick on the pitch with slow load of hands.  Good level path through the ball and good extension out front at contact.  Strong lower half creates a 91 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he is solid through the ball and delivers from an over the top arm motion.  He show cased a 72 MPH arm.

Matt Meraz, Cherokee Trail High School (2016)
A 6-foot-0, 195-pound right hand hitting outfielder who ran a 6.88 60.  Balanced at the plate with a short stride and small load back.  Level swing path and firm front side at contact.  Strong lower half on the swing produced a 90 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he shows good movement to the ball and showcased a quick release from an over the top delivery.  He showcased an accurate 73 MPH ball. 

Hunter Parker, Eaglecrest High School (2017)
A 6-foot-0, 160-pound right hand hitting outfielder/RHP who ran a 7.31 60.  Balanced at the plate with a toe tap for timing.  Shows good weight transfer on the swing and a level path to the ball.  Good extension out front produced an 84 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he moves well on the ball and attacks forward.  Delivers from an over the top arm angle and showcased an 85 MPH arm.  On the mound he crouches on his delivery and lands in-line with the plate.  Delivers from over the top with good extension out front.  He showcased an 83 MPH fastball with good command away.  He added a 71 MPH 11/5 curve and 71 MPH change. 

Ryan Robinson, Grandview High School (2017)
A 6-foot-0, 175-pound right hand hitting outfielder/RHP who ran a 7.34 60.  Balanced at the plate with a short stride for timing.  Good lower leg drive and level swing path produced balls with good carry to the gaps.  Hits off a firm front side and showcased a 91 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he attacks the ball well and fields through the ground ball and ends up in good throwing position.  He delivers from a high ¾ arm slot and showcased an 86 MPH arm.  On the mound he stand tall and then crouches on his delivery.  Slight arm wrap out of the glove.  Lands in-line with the plate with good extension out front.  Fastball was 83 MPH with good command in and out.  He added a 78 MPH curve with 11/5 break and a 71 MPH change. 

Toby Scoles, Pine Creek High School (2017)
A 6-foot-0, 180-pound left hand hitting outfielder/LHP who ran a 7.44 60.  Balanced at the plate with a long load back.  Hits off a firm front side with sweeping hand action through the zone.  Lower have drives forward and hits off a firm front side.  Exit velocity was 87 MPH.  In the field he moves well to his glove side.  Showcased a quick release and delivers from a high ¾ arm slot.  He had an 83 MPH arm with accuracy.  Stand tall on the mound with good balance.  Lands in-line with the plate and with slight tilt of his upper body on delivery.  Arm is over the top and finish is square to the plate.  

Ben Setlak, Evergreen High School (2017)
A 6-foot-0, 160-pound left hand hitting outfielder who ran a 7.51 60.  Balanced at the plate with a high leg kick and high finish.  Good lower half through the zone.  Swing path is uphill with good carry to the gaps.  He had an 83 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he moves well right and left.  Good actions fielding through the ball.  Delivers from a high ¾ arm slot and showcased an accurate 79 MPH arm. 

Dante Teigen, Canyon City High School (2016)
A 6-foot-3, 180-pound right hand hitting outfielder who ran a 7.33 60.  Balanced at the plate with a leg kick on the pitch.  Hands wrap slightly on the load and swing path is level.  Lower half drives through the ball at contact.  Had a 79 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he moves well on the ball in-front and gets in good throwing position.  Throws from a high ¾ arm slot and showcased a 78 MPH arm. 

Quincy Ulrich, ThunderRidge High School (2017)
A 6-foot-2, 175-pound right hand hitting outfielder/RHP who ran a 7.31 60.  Balanced at the plate with a slight stride and load on the pitch.  Lower half pivots through the zone.  Level swing path and good extension out front.  Had an 83 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he showed good movement to the glove side and delivers from an over the top release point.  Throws a catchable ball at  78 MPH.  On the Mound he stand tall with a quiet motion with few moving parts.  He lands in-line with the plate.  Delivery is over the top and he showed good command of three pitchers.  Fastball was 80 MPH and worked both corners well, he added a 70 MPH curve with sweeping 11/5 action and a 74 MPH change.

Coby Zimmerman, Rock Canyon (2016)
A 6-foot-1, 185-pound right hand hitting outfielder who ran a 7.32 60.  Balanced at the plate with a high leg kick for timing.  Quick hands through the zone produce a 90 MPH exit velocity.   Strong lower half drives through the zone and he shows good extension at contact.  In the field he moves well to his glove side and attacks ground balls.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot and delivers and accurate 79 MPH ball.
