Super 60: Catchers Shine On Big Stage

By Sean Duncan
Executive Director

Heading into the 14th Annual Super 60, the collective crop of catchers created a significant buzz, and their performances on Feb. 7 did not disappoint. From top to bottom, the 10 catchers at the Super 60 performed exceedingly well in front of 100-plus pro scouts, though the headliners were Ben Rortvedt (Verona Area HS, WI) and Cooper Johnson (Carmel Catholic HS, IL).

Both Johnson and Rortvedt are listed in the Prep Baseball Report top 10 overall rankings and are both potential high-round draft picks. You can poll 100 scouts, and you’d likely get a 50-50 split down the middle as to whom they prefer. Johnson is widely considered the top catch-and-throw backstop in the country, though some scouts have questioned the bat. Rortvedt, on the other hand, is a high-level left-handed hitter with power. Rortvedt has arm strength, but his receiving skills are behind Johnson’s.  Both are physical and athletically gifted; neither grossly deficient in any category. Either way sliced, they are both high-level prospects who delivered in all facets at the Super 60.

Here are all in-depth 10 catcher scouting reports from the Super 60, listed alphabetically:

Had more of a pull-side approach than previously had seen. Defensively, recorded top pop times of 1.94, 2.00, 2.02; 78 mph from the crouch. Ran a 7.67 laser-timed 60.
