Top Prospect Games Q&A with: Nick Merone

By Jeff Markle
Assistant State Director

The Colorado Top Prospect games are just one month away and we would like to begin to spotlight some of the participants at this years event.  Over the course of the next four weeks Prep Baseball Report Colorado will run Q&A's with many of the participants giving you a chance to get to know them better.  Continuing our look is Nick Merone, 2018, 5-foot-11, 165-pound, SS/3B from Rock Canyon High School.

PBR:  Describe yourself as a baseball player to those who have never seen you play:

Merone:  I'm a competitive player who does everything I can to help the team win. I play as hard as I can every single pitch of the game whether I have to lay out for a ball in the hole, hustle out a fly ball, or sprint down to first on a dropped third strike, I'll do it all. I put the team first at all times.

PBR:  What would be your dream school to play baseball at?  If you have already committed to play at the next level, why did you choose that particular school?

Merone:  My dream school would probably be Arizona State University. Ever since I was 11 years old I loved watching ASU games and a couple years later I got to walk around the campus and I loved it. Also, they have a great baseball program, which would be a lot of fun to play in.

PBR:  What are your best assets on and off the field at this point in your high school career?

Merone:  On the field I'm a competitor who brings energy, intensity, and passion to the ballpark every single day. Off the field, I choose to make the right choices and work as hard as I can on my own because hard work pays off.

PBR:  What is the best baseball advice you have received and try to follow to this point in your career?

Merone:  The best advice I have received at this point in my career is "You never know who is in the stands watching." This is advice my coaches have given me since I was 12 years old. It's really helped me to focus every pitch of the game and play the game the right way.

PBR:  What are your superstitions or routines that go on during a season?

Merone:  I'm a very superstitious player. With my uniform, I always wear three-quarter sleeves under my jersey and buckle my belt on the third hole. In the on deck circle I have the same routine every time and when I step into the batters box I have the same routine every pitch.

PBR:  What are your goals for:

This Season: My goal this season is to be the best player I can be for my team and contribute every single game. Also, I want to get physically stronger off the field.

Two Years: Win a state championship with Rock Canyon.

Four Years:  Play division 1 baseball.
