Underclass Invitational Showcase Preview

By John Cackowski
Director of Scouting

The Prep Baseball Report’s Underclass Invitational will take place this Sunday January 25th at the Slammers South Facility Englewood, Colorado. This will be the first year of the event. Underclass prospects from the 2017 and 2018 classes will come together in a pro-style workout to strut their stuff in front of the PBR scouting staff.

Let’s take a look at this year’s crop of underclassmen currently registered. All players are currently uncommitted.

2017 prospects Caleb Sloan (Regis Jesuit), Jacob Arellano (Mountain Range), Jake Hilton (Arapahoe), James Notary (Broomfield), Austin Chouinard (Regis Jesuit), and Luke Kuberski (Green Mountain) are six of the top ten players in the 2017 class who will all be in attendance.

Caleb Sloan, the No. 1 ranked player in Colorado’s 2017 class, at 6-2, 180 pounds, Sloan is already a strong physical pitcher who is still growing into his body. Caleb has reached 88 mph on multiple occasions this winter during Slammers Arm Velocity Camp. Caleb also plays football and is a quarterback for Regis. As Sloan gets back into baseball shape for the spring and with his frame he projects to potentially be lower 90's pitcher by the end of his sophomore year.  Sloan is on pace to be very elite pitcher in our state. Sloan also swings the stick, playing multiple infield positions, so don’t close the door on his two-way ability just yet.

Mountain Range SS/RHP Jacob Arellano is the No. 3 ranked player in the state. The MIF/RHP impressed PBR in the fall with very good skills showcasing good hands and range with good accuracy throwing the ball 84 mph across the diamond from shortstop. On the mound Arellano showed the same promise with a 84 mph fastball.

Arapahoe's Jacob Hilton, ranked No. 5, and Broomfield's James Notary ranked No. 7, show good projectability as RHP with 6-foot-3, 180 lb frames.

Several Top 35 players will also be in attendance including Austin Chouinard (Regis Jesuit, No 8) SS,  Luke Kuberski (Green Mountain, No. 10) OF,  Jonah Jenkins (Chaparral, No. 12) C, Ben Masi (Cherry Creek, No. 29) OF,  Payton McFadden (Highlands Ranch HS, No. 32) OF/RHP, and SS/RHP James Kester (Heritage, No. 35)

With over 50 players registered, there will be several unranked prospects sure to impress and shake up the 2017 class rankings. Click Here to view the complete roster for this Sunday’s event.

Underclass prospects who did not receive an invite to this event can still get in front of the PBR Scouting Staff this spring, summer, and fall. Schedule will be posted end of February.

Showcase analysis and new rankings will be posted after the event.
