TREY GREGORY-ALFORD (UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA COMMIT)

Trey Gregory-Alford RHP / Coronado, CO / 2024

The Cavaliers secured an extremely high-end arm when it comes to Trey Gregory-Alford. The tall and strong right-hander has been seen with his fastball up to 97 mph at times, and he has a true breaking ball sitting around 2500-2700 RPMs. Gregory-Alford was also selected for the Team USA u18 roster this summer. The draft stock on Gregory-Alford could continue to surge early in 2024 as he is still actively developing into a very high ceiling and could be flirting with triple digits on the fastball this upcoming spring.

OUR Q&A:

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Trey: Whenever I was looking for a college, I always wanted to keep in mind the player development that they had at their program. Being at a school for 3-4 years is a long time and becoming developed to continue my baseball career would be one of my biggest factors into committing to a college program. Relationships with the coaching staff and players would be crucial too because you would want to have people you can trust and bond around you everyday for the time you are at college.

PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

Trey: No it didn’t. Being far from home for me is okay and I would like to see what would be new outside of Colorado or close to it.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

Trey: It blew up after I attended Future Games in 2022 during my rising junior summer. I was talking to a few colleges but it was very spread out with schools like; Wichita State, Oklahoma State, Louisiana State, Florida State, Cowley Community College, Ohio State, and University of Virginia before that. The first time Virginia saw me play was at the Future Games in 2022 and I committed on October 13, 2022 after taking my time with my recruiting process.

PBR: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Trey: When I went on my visit during my junior year fall, it felt like home to me. Something just felt right with me being there for the next couple of years. They had a great educational program as well as the baseball program which Coach O’Conner has just had tremendous success with it.

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Trey: University of Oregon, Louisiana State University, Vanderbilt University, and Oklahoma State University.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

Trey: Chase Jaworsky from Rock Canyon High School (and now in the Astros' organization). I never faced him during the high school season, but I’ve faced him about 4 times and he just hit something to the opposite side and beat it out like it’s a daily thing he’d do. He has sneaky power which is one thing I always had in the back of my head and I knew I couldn’t leave anything for him to hit.

PBR: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

Trey: Sophomore year winter when I attended an Ohio State pitching camp and the way I was playing during travel baseball and high school.

PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Trey: Work the hardest you can everyday if 100% is 100% that’s awesome, but if your 100% is 85%, know that and try to get 1% better each day on and off the field.

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Trey: Getting selected to represent Team U.S.A in the WBSC u18 Baseball World Cup in Taiwan and playing amongst the best players in the nation is my most memorable baseball moment. A top memory from that is closing out the first game against Netherlands in Taiwan, and pitching against Korea to make it to the playoffs.

PBR: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

Trey: I think we will be good this year. We still have a young team with a lot talent and growing. I believe we can win leauge this year with the right chemistry and dedication!
