Bryant Tosses No-Hitter as Jesuit Advances

Mike Maerz
Director of Florida Operations/Area Scout

In the 6A-8 semi-final matchup, the Jesuit Tigers took on the Spoto Spartans where the home Tigers jumped out to an early lead and gave starter 2020 RHP Alex Bryant (Jesuit HS, FL) all the run support he needed. Bryant proved to be untouchable though, as he threw a no-hitter and made quick work of the Spartans lineup in their 9-0 victory.

Jesuit scored all their runs in the first inning through some key hits and walks as the Tigers lineup stayed patient as the plate. 2018 SS McGuire Weaver (Jesuit HS, FL) got things started with a leadoff single into left field and the rest of the lineup followed.

2020 C Bennett Lee (Jesuit HS, FL) drew a walk and 2018 OF Joel Brewer (Jesuit HS, FL) then drove them both in on a two-run single to put them ahead 2-0. The Jesuit lineup then strung together a couple more hits and tacked on seven more runs, giving them a commanding 9-0 lead after the first inning.

Alex Bryant was the story of the afternoon though as the uncommitted sophomore stayed locked in and delivered a high percentage of first pitch strikes all throughout his time on the mound. The tall, projectable righty worked mostly in the low 80s but complimented it well with a feel for a curveball at 66-68 mph, showing depth and throwing it for strikes. He would finish with six strikeouts and no walks allowed which showed his command of the zone. He retired the side in order from the fourth inning until the last out of the game. Look for Bryant to see a jump in velocity as he continues to add to his frame.

With the win, the Jesuit Tigers are set to take on the Jefferson Dragons this Thursday night at 7pm for the 6A-8 district final.

Scout Notes

Alex Bryant, RHP, Jesuit HS, FL (2020)
Uncommitted. The tall, projectable righty stands at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds and worked mostly in the low 80s with his fastball but complimented it well with a feel for a curveball at 66-68 mph, showing depth and throwing it for strikes. He gets some extension out in front and creates some downward tilt. Threw a high percentage of first pitch strikes, filled up the zone. Look for Bryant to see a jump in velocity as he continues to add to his frame which should only improve his overall stuff.

McGuire Weaver, MIF, Jesuit HS, FL (2018)
Florida State recruit. Currently stands at 6-foot, 165 pounds on a lean frame with athletic, quick twitch actions. Excels out of the leadoff spot by being patient in the box, looking for something to drive into the gaps. Weaver started off the game with a single to left field, stole second and third base, and then scored on an RBI single. Shows awareness on the base paths, gets good jumps, and runs the bases aggressively.

Joel Brewer, OF, Jesuit HS, FL (2018)
South Carolina recruit. Currently stands at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds and looks noticeably more physical, especially in his upper body. The hands work well at the plate and shows strength in his swing, looking to drive the ball with intent. At times he can be a little out in front, but when he stays back and lets the ball travel into the zone, he shows a feel for the barrel and creates hard contact.
