Florida 2017 Rankings Released

By Rob Sidwell

As the Florida high school baseball season hits the halfway point, we take a look at the top players in the 2017 class that we’ve been able to see thus far. Leading the way is RHP Altoon Coleman from Winter Springs HS. The big, hard-throwing right-hander is committed to Florida State and hasn’t seen a lot of action on the mound so far this spring. He has reportedly been a little banged up, but he was electric last fall. His fastball is up to 93 mph and he mixes in a power curveball.

Coleman will have some competition for the top spot with a couple position players in the South Florida area in SS Mark Vientos (Flanagan HS, FL), who is a tall, rangy and athletic player committed to Miami with good actions and a potential power bat and 1B Alejandro Toral (Archbishop McCarthy HS, FL), a big, strong left-handed power bat. He is already drawing comparisons to Eric Hosmer and hit a home run this spring in a game played at Marlins Park. At the No. 4 spot we have RHP Robert Touron (Gulliver Prep, FL), who was 88-91 this spring with excellent pitchability. Rounding out the top five is LHP Jordan Butler (Alonso HS, FL), a Florida recruit that has been 87-89 this spring with a very good curveball and a lot of upside. He also shows some ability with the bat.

The next five prospects rounding out our top 10 consist of three good, young shortstops, a transfer into IMG Academy and a very toolsy, athletic kid that doesn’t play high school baseball. SS Freddie Zamora (Killian HS, FL) is a smooth fielder with plus defense defender and is already committed to Miami. SS Jose Ciccarello (Alonso HS, FL) is a good all-around player that has some offensive pop to complement his glove. He is committed to Florida. SS Shane Shifflett (Venice HS, FL), one of the fastest players in the top 10, has good tools with a high ceiling and is verbally committed to Central Florida. At No. 8 is C Austin Bates (IMG Academy, FL), who just transferred in from out of state and is already committed to North Carolina. Probably the most intriguing player on the list is at No. 8 in OF Oraj Anu who is a home schooled kid and doesn’t play high school baseball, but will be on the summer circuit with a travel team. Anu is a physical specimen with big tools. His Mother was an Olympic sprinter, his father played football for Florida and his brother played baseball in the Orioles organization.
