Florida Burn 2016 Fall Tryouts: 2018 Standouts

By PBR Florida Staff

This past weekend we covered the 2016 Florida Burn Fall Tryouts which showcased nearly 200 players either previously with the Florida Burn or some looking to make a team in the fall. The players ran through a pro-style workout which included infield/outfield, batting practice, and a game on both days as well as some instruction and simulated game action to fill in for some pitchers on day two.

Through the course of the weekend, we had the chance to bear down on players from the 2017-2021 classes. Our scouting staff sat down and evaluated all of the performances over the course of the weekend and below are the reports on those who stood out in the 2018 class.

Pablo Garabito. LHP/OF. Lakewood Ranch HS, FL (2018)
6-foot-1 160 with a slender, lanky frame. Fastball ranged from 83-85 mph. Curveball ranged from 71-73 mph. He is athletic and projectable with a clean and easy ¾ arm action. He shows a feel for pitching working with a good pace and staying down in the zone to both sides of the plate. Along with impressing on the mound, offensively he had two hits in the game and two solid rounds of BP from the left side.  The hands are loose and quick through the zone, he stays balanced, and creates some present gap-to-gap power with more to come as he fills out. Although most would say his long term future is on the mound, he has the potential to be a quality two-way player at the next level.

Mitch Donofrio. SS/3B/RHP. Venice HS, FL (2018)
Stocky, 5-foot-11 170 pounder that had a double and drew a walk after driving a long foul home run on day one while adding another base hit on day two. He has an early, somewhat stiff load but manages to stay in rhythm and on time to the baseball. He showed quick hands and a consistently short, direct swing to the baseball while utilizing a strong lower half. Fastball ranged from 82-84 mph, came out of the hand well. Got on hitters quickly. Off speed needs to develop, showed a little feel for a slider at 71 mph but was more like a cutter. Showed the ability to make the plays with a strong, accurate throw from third base during infield/outfield.

Jacob Josey. SS. Palmetto HS, FL (2018)
5-foot-11 150 pounder with a wiry, athletic frame. Had two singles on Saturday and a double in the left-center field gap on Sunday. Showed well in batting practice by spraying line drives into the gaps during both of his rounds. The swing is compact and displayed the ability to consistently find the barrel. Above average actions at short. He not only can move well from side to side, but consistently came through the baseball well. Fastball ranged from 81-82 mph, slider was at 71 mph, and change up ranged from 74-76 mph when he was on the mound.
