Florida Draft Preview
June 6, 2016
By Justin Burgess and Nathan Rode
The 2016 Major League Draft takes place June 9-11. In advance of the draft, Prep Baseball Report is posting a summary of each state in the coverage area with scouting reports on the top high school draft prospects.
By historical standards, it’s a down year for Florida with top prospects falling victim to injuries or simply not taking an expected step forward. LHP Cole Ragans (North Florida Christian HS, FL) will give the Eagles a drafted pitcher in three straight years, following LHP Carson Sands and RHP Cole Sands, who are now with the Cubs and Florida State respectively. LHP Jesus Luzardo (Stoneman Douglas HS, FL) had Tommy John surgery in March, but was good enough early to warrant an early-round selection. If SS Drew Mendoza (Lake Minneola HS, FL) drops because of signability, the state of Florida could be without a high school pick in the first round for the firs time since 1995.
21. Cole Ragans, LHP, North Florida Christian HS, FL
Ragans has a tall, lean and loose frame at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, similar to Cole Hamels. He gets deep in the back with a slightly high front side and wraps his wrist. He’ll occasionally pull off line, but has a loose, easy working arm with a fluid delivery and over-the-top slot.
