Florida Insider: Orlando Scorpions Tryout

By Rob Sidwell
Florida Scouting Director

This past weekend was a big weekend for travel ball teams as many were holding tryouts for the 2015 summer season. As usual, the Orlando Scorpions travel ball program brought out some of Florida’s finest talent at all levels. Over 300 players traveled to the Lake Myrtle complex to get a chance to play for one of the most prestigious travel ball programs in the country.

PBR Florida Scout Don Jacoby was in attendance and saw some of the top 2016 arms in the state. Here's a look at what he saw.

+ RHP Todd Peterson 2016 (Lake Mary HS) is a 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-hander with an ideal pitchers frame. Fair overall athlete. Tall, big bodied kid with good overall strength. Fairly smooth delivery. He throws from a high ¾ slot with a loose arm action. His fastball bumps 93 mph, but mostly 87-90 with a short tail and occasional sink when down in zone. The fastball was around the plate but he lacks command of the pitch now. He flashed a tight ¾ tilt curveball with lots of depth and showed feel for a fading changeup. Overall, he has good size and arm strength. Solid major league average velocity in short outing. His curveball and change have a ways to go. He was around the zone with all three pitches. Peterson should be one of the top high school right hand pitchers in Florida. Will be a 2016 draft. Verbally committed to LSU

+ RHP Tyler Baum 2016 (West Orange HS) is a 6-foot, 160-pound right-hander with a skinny, loose, athletic frame and good physical projection. His fastball bumps 91 mph, but mostly 86-90 with short tailing life from a loose high ¾ slot, but there`s more there. Tight, late action curveball and feel for a sinking/fading change. He was around the plate with all three pitches in short 1 inning stint. Still a young kid with lots of room to fill out and get stronger. Shows arm strength and the ability to spin breaking ball. He should be one of the better right handed pitchers coming out of Florida in 2016. Could become a 2016 draft. Verbally committed to North Carolina.

+ RHP Ross Korosec 2016 (Winter Springs HS) is a 5-foot-11, 160-pound right-hander with a young looking body and a thin, athletic frame. Arm works well and seems to repeat delivery. His fastball is 84-88 mph with occasional short tailing action. Shows good feel for sinking change. Flashed a late action curveball. Works fast and throws strikes. Has lots of upside. Change is best pitch now. His velocity has a chance to improve as he fills out and gets stronger. Verbally committed to USF.

+ RHP Jared Cenal 2016 (Tampa Catholic HS) is an uncommitted 6-foot-4, 185-pound right-hander with a tall, thin frame with lots of room to fill out and get stronger. Throws from a high ¾ arm slot with a good downhill delivery. Live fastball, mostly 84-88 mph with arm side tailing life. Showed good feel for change and not afraid to use it. Inconsistent curveball rotation, more like a slurve. Jared has lots of upside. How he develops will depend on his future size and strength gains. Fastball has good life and he has lots of confidence in change and will use it anytime in the count.
