Florida Invitational: Day One and Two Scout Blog

The 2020 PBR Florida Invitational kicked off July 17th and 18th at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, The event features teams from the 16U, 17U, and 18U age groups. Each team is guaranteed four games with championships on Monday. We ran into some rain the first two days which shortened the schedule for each day.

Gage Allen RHP / 1B / Auburndale, FL / 2021Athletic right hander has a quick arm. True over the top arm slot. Works quickly with the fastball up to 87. Pounded the zone for strikes and worked both sides of the plate effectively. |
Julian Balzer LHP / Rockledge , FL / 2021Large, durable frame. Use a three pitch mix: FB (85-87, T 88), a sweeping CB (77-78), and a CH (77), thrown from a low 3/4 slot.

Tony Calvo C / RHP / Tampa Catholic , FL / 2022Calvo went 7 shutout innings allowing just 2 hits with 11 K’s in a win for Hit Factory. Stocky frame sitting 77-79. Showed the ability to change speed and miss barrels

Andres Camargo RHP / Plant, FL / 2021Tall, slender right hander. Long, but quick arm. Comes from a ¾ arm slot. Fastball sitting 80-84 and topped 85. Heavy fastball that got on batters quick. Flashed an above average breaking ball at times.

Robert Fernandez RHP / RHP / Belen Jesuit Preparatory School , FL / 2021The large framed right hander has shown the ability to use his FB (85-87, T89) to collect outs. Commands mostly arm side w/ avg life at the bottom of the zone.

Cory Filley C / 3B / Pasco, FL / 2022Found the barrel all game. Three hits on three hard hit balls. Quick behind the plate and moves well laterally to block balls in the dirt.

William Hagen 1B / RHP / Eau Gallie, FL / 2021Rankings StateRank: 121 / POS: 6
Stocky strong frame. Wide base with quick hands at the plate. Pull-side power as he turned on a double to left that was 95 mph off the bat. Reached base three more times. |
James Hankerson 1B / OF / Berkeley Prep, FL / 2023At 6-foot-3, 240 pounds, Hankerson continues to show strength in his swing. Switch hitter with gap to gap power from both sides. Launched a triple in the left center gap. Moves well for his size. |
Javier James SS / RHP / Jefferson, FL / 20216-foot-1 180 lb athletic, high waisted frame. Athletic body extension/separation. High 3/4 arm slot, projectable arm strength. FB: 83-85, CB: 67-68. 3 K’s thru 1.2 innings. True, fluid actions at SS. James is an all around athlete. |
Caleb Miller RHP / OF / Melbourne , FL / 2022Athletic right hander has shown the ability to throw his FB (82-84, T87) to both sides of the plate. Plenty room for added future strength.

Brent Ostrander 2B / OF / Melbourne, FL / 2021Stocky, athletic frame. Twitchy actions/fluid swing as he roped a line drive past the left fielder for a 2 RBI triple. 2nd AB barrels up another hard line drive to LF. |
Trey Santana RHP / Sunlake, FL / 2022Rankings StateRank: 152 / POS: 24
Large, athletic, high waisted frame. Above average bat speed. 1st AB, hit a line drive to SS at 102.5 mph. 2nd AB, sent a line drive up the middle for a single coming off bat at 99 mph. |
Cooper Smith RHP / Chiles, FL / 2021Athletic right-hander was sitting 83-85. Deceptive, change of pace delivery coming from a high ¾ arm slot. Showed confidence for the breaking ball as he threw it in any count for strikes.
