Lyon Richardson Dominates in 10-0 Jensen Beach Win

Doug Freeman
Florida Scouting Director

The Space Coast was the place to be last night, not for a rocket launch, but for the matchup of Jensen Beach’s Lyon Richardson and Sebastian River’s Zach Young. While a lot of the professional scouts are currently in Cay, NC following the NHSI, including out Nathan Rode and you can follow his coverage here, there was still a good crowd on hand to see this highly anticipated matchup.

Neither pitcher disappointed for their team, as they cruised through the first three inning, with both teams combining for three hits while striking out a combined elleven times. Richardson was especially impressive in the first inning, where he threw all fastballs ranging from 91-95 mph and striking out two. He would continue to work mostly off of the fastball for the first three innings. Young would also be dominate early for Sebastian. Working off of an 88-91 mph while touching 92 mph, mixed in a curveball at 72-76 mph and a splitter at 83-86 mph, keeping the Jensen Beach hitters off balance for most of the evening.

As we headed into the fourth inning, Richardson had flashed an occasional curveball at 74-78 mph, but also began to mix in a harder slider at 80-82 mph. Both of the breaking balls became unhittable for the Sebastian lineup, who was overmatched most of the evening. Jensen Beach would push a pair of runs across in the fourth thanks to a past ball and a RBI fielder’s choice ground ball from Jeremey Galinis. Richardson would return to the mound in the fifth inning and strike out the side. The fastball settled in at 90-94 mph and the pair of breaking pitchers both had hard, late action. With the curveball showing a much tighter spin than in the past and the slider, being a pitch I haven’t seen from him, having late tilt and coming from the same tunnel as the fastball. Richardson would finish with the final line of allowing no runs on one hit while striking out eleven over five innings.

While Young would also return for the fifth and sixth the velocity would drop off some, yet he was still very effective with the curveball and splitter. He would finish allowing the two runs on three hits while striking out six.

With Young out of the game, Jensen Beach exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning. Including singles from Zach Miller and Jeremey Galinis, a triple from Robert Pierski and RBI’s from a Kyle Abbot single and a Taylor Higgins triple win by mercy rule in the sixth 10-0.
