PA Notebook: Fall Program Review

The fall schedule of events in Pennsylvania came to a close with the Elite Prospect Showcase on November 2 and the success of those participating has been impressive. To date, 24 prospects that participated in one of three fall PBR events in PA have gone on to announce their college commitments. Following is a brief look at each of the events and some of the more notable commitments that came out of each.


Zach GuthFall college prospect Program

The fall program allowed prospects to showcase their talents on 11 college campuses over the span of six weekends. There were plenty of big performances during the course of the program, but none was more impressive than that of LHP Zach Guth (Franklin Area HS). The junior struck out 40 batters in 16 innings of work during the course of the fall and received considerable attention from Division I schools around the region. Guth announced his commitment to Indiana University last week.

Other Notables:

+ RHP Tim Brennan (Holy Ghost Prep), ranked No. 46 in the PA Class of 2015, committed to St. Joseph's University following a strong showing on the mound at Temple University.

+ RHP Jon Fisher (Plymouth-Whitemarsh HS), ranked No. 41 in the PA Class of 2015, committed to James Madison University after impressing in his outing at Misericordia University.

+ SS Jimmy Galusky (Preston HS, WV), ranked No. 12 in the WV Class of 2014, committed to West Virginia University following several strong performances in the fall program at various locations.

+ 3B/1B Stuart Schley (Orville HS, OH), ranked No. 50 in the OH Class of 2014, committed to West Point following a strong showing at La Roche College.

Brendan MillerUnsigned Senior Showcase

RHP Brendan Miller (Williams Valley HS), ranked No. 107 in the PA Class of 2014, sat 85-86 during a strong bullpen session. He commanded his complimentary pitches and did not lose velocity working out of the stretch. Miller committed to Penn State Harrisburg, one of the nine colleges in attendance, shortly after the completion of the event. 

Other Notables:

+ C/3B Alex Salesky (Wilson HS) and OF/SS Collin Fantaskey (Warren Area HS) both participated in the fall program and the Unsigned Senior Showcase. Salesky committed to Susquehanna University and Fantaskey gave his commitment to Mercyhurst University since the completion of the two events.

+ RHP/C Shane Emrich (Spring-Ford HS) showed well in all facets of the game, leading to a visit to La Roche College. Emrich gave his commitment to La Roche shortly after his campus visit, a school that was in attendance at the event.

Justin VardianElite prospect showcase

The Elite Prospect Showcase was a big success with 68 prospects displaying their skills in front of 13 colleges. The day belonged to RHP Justin Vardian (Bishop McCort HS). The 6-foot, 175 pound righty sat 88-89 during an electric bullpen session. He committed to Penn State University roughly one hour after the event concluded.

Other Notables:

+ SS/RHP Alex Dirienzo (Somerset HS), ranked No. 166 in the PA Class of 2014, showcased his two-way abilities. The 6-foot, 180-pound prospect improved his stock greatly with a solid bullpen session, sitting 85-86. He committed to the University of Akron today.

+ C/3B Wes Carson (Marriotts Ridge HS, MD) made the trip from Maryland to showcase his strong arm and switch-hitting power bat. Carson impressed in all facets of the game and committed to Indiana University of PA inside of a week from the event's completion.

+ LHP/OF J.J. Bleday (Titusville HS) showcased a rare combination of athleticism, size and potential while working out solely as an outfielder. The two-way prospect committed to Vanderbilt University today.

Devon WalkerEarly signing period

The early signing period for prospects in the Class of 2014 runs November 13 - 20. Players who would like to add their photo to the PBR Pennsylvania NLI Signing Album should tweet their photo @pbrpennsylvania.

SS/RHP Devon Walker (DuBois Area HS), ranked No. 86 in the PA Class of 2014, signed his NLI last week with the University of Pitt-Johnstown. Walker was a standout during the fall in all facets of the game and was the PBR District 9 Player of the year as a junior in 2013.
