Scouting notes from the Easton Rockets tryout

By Rob Sidwell

St Lucie, Fl --- The Easton Rockets had their Fall tryouts at the New York Mets Spring training complex in St Lucie a couple weeks ago and there were plenty of standouts. Most of the players came from the local counties of Palm Beach and Broward as well as some from the St Lucie area. Today we take a look at Seniors, class of 2016, guys that jumped out at me. Quite a few have committed already and a few that have the chance to become drafts like 2016 OF Edmond Americaan from Trinity Christian and 2016 SS Swindley Lint from Highlands Christian. One that stood out for not being committed yet was 2016 RHP Wade Walton from Jensen Beach HS. He certainly showed the ability and stuff to pitch at the next level.

Edmond Americaan Trinity Christian OF 2016
Auburn commit. 6-foot-1, 160 pound outfielder with a live lean athletic projectable body. Loose quick bat with some loft in bat path. Quick hands. Will have future power with physical maturity. Loose athletic actions in the OF. Good instincts. Above average runner underway. Should be a 2016 draft.

Logan Taplett C Benjamin School 2016
Furman commit. 5-foot-11, 160 pound catcher with a stocky strong body on medium sized frame. Short quick stroke with some bat speed. Doubles type power. Good catch and throw guy with a solid average ML arm. Ran a 7.4 60.

Aldrich DeJongh OF Trinity Christian 2016
FAU commit. 5-foot-9, 160 pound outfielder with a loose live athletic body on a medium sized frame. Athletic actions in OF with good instincts. Has closing speed. Made an over the head diving catch to deep LF. Smoked a line drive single to RF. Short quick stroke with good strength and quickness in hands.

Swindley Lint SS Highlands Christian 2016
Uncommitted Senior. 6-foot, 170 pound short stop with a loose lean athletic projectable body. Loose quick infield actions with enough arm to stay at SS and softness in his hands. Loose quick bat with projectable strength. Good hitters hands. Stays inside ball and uses whole field. Ran a 6.9 60.  Could become a 2016 draft.

Connor Power C/3B Palm Beach Central 2016
Notre Dame commit. 5-foot-11, 180 pound catcher/third baseman with a stocky thick strong body. Solid receiver with plenty of arm strength. Quick release with accuracy. He’s usually around the bag. Good quickness and strength in bat. Good bat path. Stays inside ball well. Power to both gaps. Also has good actions at 3B. Very good fielding mechanics with soft hands and light on his feet. Plenty of arm for that position.

Matt Ellmyer SS Benjamin School 2016
Wofford commit. 5-foot-11, 165 pound middle infielder with a loose athletic body and good infield actions and soft quick hands. Very good defender with enough arm to stay at SS. Good instincts. Loose quick bat that is more of a contact type hitter. Bat will improve and maybe get some power with added strength. Has also been up to 85 mph on the mound.

Erik Strandberg RHP Palm Beach Central 2016
Uncommitted Senior. 6-foot-2, 190 pound right hander with a thick body and a loose arm at a high ¾ arm slot. Has a low elbow at release. Almost pushes ball. Fast ball was 81-83 mph. Curve ball was 70-71 with ¾ rotation.

Jeffrey Gerlica RHP Lincoln Park Academy 2016
Air Force commit. 6-foot-2, 185 pound right hander with a loose lean projectable body. Loose easy working arm at high ¾ arm slot. Lands across his body. Fast ball was 87-88 mph with some downward tilt to it. The curve ball was a downer with occasional depth at 72-73 mph. Threw strikes. Will throw harder with physical maturity.

Colten Rendon RHP Dwyer HS 2016
Winthrop commit. 6-foot-3, 220 pound right hander with a big thick blocky body and strength in the lower half. Long loose working arm with a fluid delivery. Opens a bit early in the back but has a live arm. Fast ball was 87-90 mph with tailing action. Curve ball was a big loopy ¾ breaker at 65-66 mph. Throws a lot of strikes.

CJ Bottiglieri RHP Seminole Ridge HS 2016
6-foot-1, 195 right hander with a blocky strong body and a loose easy working arm at a high ¾ arm slot. Lands a bit open and has a low elbow at release. Fast ball was 84-86 mph with some tailing action. Curve ball was 70-72 mph with ¾ rotation. Will throw harder with added strength.

Armando Rodriguez Unknown RHP 2016
Uncommitted Senior. 6-foot, 170 pound right hander with a lean loose body. Some effort delivery. Arm is short in back with a high ¾ arm slot. Fast ball is 83-86 mph with some arm side run. Curve ball is a ¾ breaker at 72-73 mph. Throws strikes.

Nikolas Constantakos RHP Jupiter Christian 2016
Charleston Southern commit. 6-foot-190 pound right hander with a thick strong lower half. Loose easy working arm at a ¾ to low ¾ arm slot. Compact delivery with some deception. Hides ball in back. Chokes it a bit in back. Turns fast ball over at 86-88 mph with tailing action. Curve ball is a big loopy breaker and he raises arm slot to get over it at 67-68 mph. The change up is a work in progress at 71-72 mph. He drops his arm slot and slows down to throw it, but it has some fade to it. Will be a good college arm.

Wade Walton RHP Jensen Beach HS 2016
Uncommitted Senior. 6-foot-4, 2015 pound right hander with a big strong blocky athletic body. Loose arm at an over hand arm slot. Hides ball in back. Fast ball has good down tilt at 85-86 mph. Curve ball is a short ¾ breaker at 73-76 mph. Change up has good arm seed at 80-81 mph. Good feel for pitching. Throws 3 pitches for strikes with a fluid delivery. Will be a good college pitcher.
