VP of Operations

It was a historic preseason here in New York with our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff covering 700+ players at showcase events, all February long. The dust has settled and we are now ramping up our efforts in player rankings, scouting reports, and recap articles. While the outcome of the 2020 HS season is on hold, the Prep Baseball Report (NY) will continue to provide unrivaled coverage for the amateur baseball players in the Empire State.

As we continue our follow up of the Preseason Tour, we will be highlighting "Top Performer Spotlights" on players who recently stood-out at our preseason events. Stay tuned with us for the latest information on the 2020 spring season and beyond.

Scouting Report

Physical: 6-foot-4, 165-pounds. Long, lean frame with room to fill out and add strength.
Run: 7.47 runner in the 60.
Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance to start with his hands low and in front of body; gains ground while striding back to even, hands load up and to back of his shoulder Barrel is quick into the zone leveling out just before contact and finishing on slight uphill plane.
Power: 83 MPH raw exit velocity. hard line drives with power potential to the pull side.
Defense: Steady foot work on approach fielding the ball on outside of glove into a crow hop.
Arm: Long arm swing into a high 3/4 release. OF - 75 MPH.

Pitching Delivery: Works with even tempo and slight coil through knee lift to a short stride getting on top at release point.
Arm Action: Long arm action dropping down out of the glove building arm speed to a 3/4 slot.
FB: T78, 76-78 MPH. Arm side tail low in the zone.
CB: 64-65 MPH. 11-5 shape with late break.
CH: 62-65 MPH. good speed differential maintaining arm speed with cut to it.

Standout Skill
To me, the way Gay was handing the bat during BP. Hands are low and and stay level to the baseball. Whips the barrel through the zone and does a good job of elevating the ball for solid line drives.
Player Projection
Gay is a young player and still has much more developing and growing to do, so the possibility of being a two-way player is always still there. 6-foot-4 with plenty of room to hold more weight could be intimidating look on the mound. I think he will continue to grow and be a pitcher as he develops for velo and movement on his off-speed.

Quick Hit
" Would like to see him use his stride a little more and cover more ground to cut that 60yd dash time down. Fielding, I like how controlled you are. It shows me that you know your proper steps and the correct way to field a ball from the outfield, but don't be afraid to attack the baseball and charge it. Come through it and use all the energy to throw it through your target. Pitching, I would like to see more fluidity in the delivery. It looks like Gay has a stiff lover half and that needs to be engaged more."
