GHSA Diamond Notes: 3/9 to 3/15
March 18, 2020
Throughout the 2020 high school season, we’re accepting nominations from the coaches across the state of Georgia for their program’s Player of the Week candidates. While there can only be one Player of the Week in the state, we’ll be using this weekly GA Diamond Notes post to highlight the top performers of the past week who fell just short of POTW honors. We cover all corners of the state – from 1A to 7A – and the evidence is in this post.
Below are the Diamond Notes from March 9 to March 15.
Sam Cherry, RHP, Hillgrove, 2020 & Ethan Bobo, RHP, Hillgrove, 2021
Teammates of our Hitter of the Week 3B Trace Cate, Cherry and Bobo helped propel to a three game series sweep over Kennesaw Mountain. Bobo got the start in Game 1 of the series and tossed six and two-thirds innings, scattering three hits, zero runs, striking out seven and walking two. Cherry entered in the seventh inning of that game with two outs, the tying run at the plate, and struck out the batter, securing the 2-0 win. Cherry came back two days later to start Game 3 and went the distance for a complete game 6-2 victory. He collected six strikeouts, walked two, allowed four hits, two runs, one earned.
Adam Lowery, RHP, Brookstone, 2021
Lowery very nearly put in a Pitcher of the Week performance for this week, just barely getting beat out by Tattnall Square’s Dawson Brown. Up against Schley County, he tossed a complete game one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts, one hit and one walk. For the year, he has compiled an ERA of 0.3.
Noah Goss, RHP, Fellowship Christian, 2021 & David Bishop, SS, Fellowship Christian, 2021
Uncommitted junior, RHP Noah Goss helped Fellowship Christian sweep King’s Ridge last week. Goss tossed six shutout innings, striking out three batters in a 17-2 victory. Bishop, a TCU commit, nearly took home Hitter of the Week honors this week for his 5-for-10, one triple, four runs scored and four stolen bases against King’s Ridge.
Zander Sechrist, LHP, Flowery Branch, 2020
Sechrist, a Tennessee commit, has had one of the best starts to the season on the mound, and we have had the pleasure of being in attendance for a number of them. Although, we were not at Flowery Branch’s matchup against Marist, it comes as no surprise that the southpaw did what he did. Sechrist tossed a complete game shutout, allowing three hits and striking out three in a 2-0 win.
Brooks Gorman, RHP/3B, Tattnall Square, 2020
For three years, Gorman has put up video game like stats on the diamond, and this year it is no different for the uncommitted senior. Facing one of the top teams in Class 3A, First Presbyterian Day, Gorman picked up a win, throwing eight innings, facing the minimum in seven of the eight, striking out eight, walking none, allowing two hits. At the plate, he went 4-for-6 with two runs batted in, two runs scored, two walks and an OBP of. 700.
Bryce Archie, RHP, McEachern, 2022, Jacob Hall, OF, McEachern, 2021 & DJ Banks, SS, McEachern, 2020
Against one of the top ranked teams in our GA Power 25, sophomore RHP Bryce Archie pitched a gem, throwing a complete game two-hit shutout, while striking out eight. During the three game series against Cobb, Hall collected four hits, two runs batted in, one run scored, three walks and one hit by pitch. Banks was a rock up the middle for the Indians with a 1.000 fpct, turning three double plays, seven putouts, three assists.
Jack Gerber, RHP, St. Francis, 2020 & Carter Davies, RHP, St. Francis, 2022
The Knights pitching staff an incredible week, combining for 21 innings while only allowing one earned run. Gerber tossed a complete game shutout against Mt. Bethel, allowing one hit while striking out five. Davies got the start against Whitefield and picked up the win, going five innings, allowing zero runs, two hits and striking out nine.
TJ Trudnak, RHP/OF, Commerce, 2020
An uncommitted senior, Trudnak pitched five and two-thirds innings against Oglethorpe County, allowing four hits, zero runs and striking out nine. He also pitched in offensively, going 2-for-3 with three walks.
