Games Notes: John Milledge at Dominion Christian

John Milledge Academy got its GISA class AAA title defense off to a resounding start with an emphatic double-header sweep over Dominion Christian School. After the first four Trojans to the plate struck out, the offense got going, scratching across single runs in the second and third innings before back-to-back five-spots brought a 12-1 run-rule victory in game one. A 9-4 win in game two sets JMA up to face the winner of the series between Frederica Academy and Valwood School in the quarterfinals.

Senior left-fielder Tyler Bass was a sparkplug for the Trojans out of the leadoff spot in game one, battling at the plate and reaching base three times, including a double and four RBI. John Milledge senior shortstop Colton Brewer went 2-3 with three RBI and brought energy to the game defensively. Trojans junior right-handed pitcher Jared Prestwood effectively mixed arm slots, working primarily from a slightly below sidearm look, while occasionally coming up top to a more conventional slot for a few more velo ticks.

Dominion Christian 2021 RHP/Util Treyton Rank stands out for his physicality at a young age, sporting a developed build and strong legs typical of an upperclassman running back. Only saw one inning of his start in game two, but his fastball sat 85-86 in the wind-up and 83-84 in the stretch. The pitch has run and sink when he doesn't spin off and drop his elbow He exhibited a good feel for an 11/5 curveball at 67-68. Also showed a mid-70s change-up and low-70s slider during his first inning warm-up tosses and even flashed a split in the bullpen prior to the game. Delivery is compact and repeatable and he throws out of a high three-quarter slot. The right-handed hitter's swing appears to work, although he was casting his hands and working around below average velocity on this day. Did not record any line times for him.

Young Harris-bound right-handed pitcher Michael Caldwell was dominant early for Dominion Christian, sitting 86-88 with two solid secondary offerings before fatiguing due to pitching through an illness.
