Prospect Watch - Allatoona Buccaneers

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

The spring season has begun in Georgia with tryouts recently taking place throughout the state. As part of PBR's coverage, we will be heading out this spring to cover games during the high school season, providing scouting reports, game recaps, Power25 rankings, and more. To prime our audience for that, we will be taking a look at just some of the standout prospects we have seen in our short, yet event filled time in Georgia. Today, we look at the Allatoona Buccaneers. Allatoona is a talent rich team who will be a force this season, as they have been for the last decade. We profile five of their varsity members ahead of the season, although this list could have very easily included at least 10 Buccaneers.

Allatoona Buccaneers

Logan McGuire RHP / Allatoona, GA / 2021

The highest uncommitted prospect in Georgia's Class of 2021, McGuire is a long, uber-projectable 6-foot-3, 170-pounds, moves with smooth actions on the mound. Arm works long and continuous on the back-side with quick arm speed, accelerates out front consistently to a high ¾ slot, repeats. Drop and drive delivery, keeps front side high, leads with hip, works on-line, explosive at release and upon landing with stride leg, finishes with some recoil and crossing over. His fastball plays in the low-90s (1900 rpm), up to 92 this fall with plenty more in the tank. Is dominant with his fastball, so we have rarely seen the curveball. The pitch is serviceable, and there is certainly room for improvement.

Brett Blomquist C / SS / Allatoona , GA / 2021

Blomquist is the truly a rare super utility prospect. He checks in at a lanky, athletic 6-foot-2, 171-pounds. A 6.89 60 yard dash runner gives you a glimpse of at the natural athletic ability he possesses. Equipped with a strong arm behind the plate (79 mph), he is much more effective when he relies on his strong transfer abilities and quick footwork over pure arm strength, posting sub 2.00 pop times regularly. Infield and outfield arm strength are both above-average, but the actions allow for easy projection with added strength. At the plate, he is a gap-to-gap hitter, his quick hands and advanced hand-eye coordination allow for him to consistently be on-time for hard contact which leads to power. Added strength to his frame and Blomquist will be set for a big year.

Fisher Paulsen LHP / Allatoona , GA / 2021

Paulsen has really really added to his frame over the past six months, putting on an additional 15 pounds of muscle and it clearly shows in his game. The left-handed pitcher stands a strong, athletic 5-foot-11, 175-pounds.  Arm works clean and loose to a 3/4 slot, quick arm speed, consistent slot. Mechanically sound delivery, stays tall throughout, works on-line, finishes square to the mound, showed the ability to change timing effectively while still maintaining balance and arm slot. Fastball presently can reach 86-87 (2280rpm), settling in at 83-86. his slider is his bread and butter, commands to all parts of the zone, 73-76 (2250rpm), two-plane break, routinely catches the outside of the plate, and gives hitters problems.

Jackson McElvy SS / OF / Allatoona, GA / 2022

A spark plug type of player, McElvy plays larger than his listed 5-foot-8, 135-pound frame, athletically built with lean muscle. Offensively, he hits out of a balanced setup with high hands that drop and load back, reverse toe-tap stride, stays balanced through contact. Has good feel for the barrel with a line drive gap-to-gap approach, swing path has some incline to it. Packs a surprising amount of power in his frame, and has shown the ability to consistently find the barrel. When he gets on base, he is always a threat, getting good jumps and using above-average speed. Has all the right action up the middle, and a high IQ to be in the right place at the right time. Through multiple looks at LakePoint, he has always been an offensive catalyst for his team.

Ethan Sutton 3B / C / Allatoona, GA / 2023

One of the top ranked prospects in Georgia’s Class of 2023. Physically advanced for age, standing 6-foot-2, 170-pounds, will only continue to add strength and firm up frame as he matures. Starts in a balanced position with hands at ear level, hands load back with a barrel wrap, short stride, inverts stride leg foot before opening up with aggression, good balance. Barrel works mostly level through the zone, did flash an uphill path occasionally. Still developing his approach at the plate, at-times he looks to pull and elevate the ball with force, other times he shortened up and took a more gap-to-gap, line drive approach. Considerable raw power for his age, generates hard contact to all fields. Has a chance to make an immediate impact for the Buccaneers this spring.
