Tate McKee RHP, 2023, Mt. Paran
Georgia Tech Commit. 6-foot-2, 180 pounds. When watching this elite athlete on the hill, every pitch has the potential for A/AVG life. One of the most efficient movers in the class, it’s almost shocking how easy it is for him to produce big velocity. Although he has a lean frame with long levers, the delivery is incredibly compact. Throwing hard isn’t just about arm speed, and Tate is a great example of that. His short circle arm action is able to work so quickly because of its compact path and how well connected it is to the largest muscles on the backside. The arm is never alone, as his well timed coil in stride allows the front hip to lead the delivery while his upper half stacks over the back hip+quad+knee. With perfect weight distribution at landing and every muscle firing together with his arm, the elite athleticism can take over. The result is a FB in the 91-94 range with edge to edge run flashing turbo sink. Playing the pitch up even more is the fact that he hides the ball extremely well, as release point comes out of nowhere for plus deception. The looming threat of his dominant SL ruins hitter’s confidence before they even step into the box, as he can throw it for strikes to both edges in any count and bury it with ease on command. The pitch has consistent 2 plane depth and very late, sudden sweep that gets an unbelievable amount of swing and miss. It was very encouraging to see him throw 2 CH at 86 with very similar life to his FB, and I believe this is an average MLB pitch long term. Regardless of what happens in the 2023 MLB Draft, this is a Rd 3 talent who will be an immediate Freshman All-American candidate if he ends up at the Flats.
