Prep Baseball Report

Senior Spotlight: Christian King

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

Our goal at Prep Baseball Report is to promote high school players, and give them the exposure they need to be able to play at the next level. With the 2020 high school season in limbo, we want to continue to be able to promote players, even when baseball is not being played. Starting today, we will be spotlighting several uncommitted prospects to help them get the exposure they need to play at the next level.

Our first look at C/INF Christian King (Habersham Central, 2020) came this fall when came to LakePoint with Line Drive Academy. He made a good impression at the plate, showing quick hands. King takes a line drive approach and uses his hands to turn on fastballs to the pull-side. We got a better look at King later in the fall when he attended the Fall Upperclass Games. Once again we saw a line drive approach and an ability to use the whole field, spraying the ball. When he does elevate the ball, King back spins the ball, creating more loft. Defensively, he is apt behind the plate and can handle things up the middle at second base. King is still physically coming into his own and making strides at the plate. Given some more time to develop, he can be a valuable asset for a team at the next level.

Scouting Report

11/10/19 - 5-foot-8, 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher, proportional build, broad shoulders, strength throughout. Offensively, open setup, short stride, hands load back to an arm bar, good balance. Steep barrel path, short to the ball, creates line drive contact gap-to-gap, 82 exit velocity off a tee. Went 1-for-2 in-game with a double in his first at-bat. Defensively, traditional catcher’s arm action, short and over-the-top, 72 from the crouch. Sits upright in his when receiving, clean on exchanges and short, fluid footwork, pop times ranged 2.20-2.37. Ran a 7.57 laser-timed 60.

9/03/19 - King had a good weekend at the plate. Athletic stance that stays within his legs. Short, quiet load. Fast hands that showed the ability to turn on FB. Legs and hands work in-sync at the plate. Solid uncommitted player to watch in 2020 class.
